忘却からの帰還

米国の進化論教育を守るNational Center for Science Educationが科学と信仰の調停を目指すプロジェクトを始めている。その責任者の記事がWashington Postに掲載された。

John West recently asked, "Is evolution compatible with God?" West, a senior fellow at the creationist Discovery Institute, concluded that religious belief and scientific inquiry are mutually exclusive. He is wrong.

Evolution can certainly be compatible with religious faith. Because the evidence for evolution is so overwhelming, we must consider it to be a truth about the natural world--the world which we as people of faith believe was created by God, and the world made understandable by the reason and natural senses given to us by God. Denying science is a profoundly unsound theological position. Science and faith are but two ways of searching for the same truths.

進化論は確かに宗教信仰と矛盾しない。進化論の証拠は圧倒的なので、神よって創造され、神によって我々に与えられた理性と自然感によって理解可能に創造されていると、宗教信仰者が信じている自然界の真実として、進化論を考えなければらない。科学を否定することは、非常に不安定な神学上のポジションである。科学と信仰は同じ真実を探求する2つの方法である。

この立場は、「われわれの著者たちは、天体の形状について真理であることを知っていたが、これらの人々を通して語りたもう神の霊は、救いに何ら益ないことを人々に語ろうとは望まれなかったのだと。」という遅くとも紀元400年頃にはキリスト教に存在していた考え方の延長ではある。

しかし、この流れはDr. Peter M.J. Hessの信仰するローマカトリックの立場であっても、福音主義キリスト教やSeventh Day Adventistの立場ではない。これらは教義として地球も宇宙も6000歳だと考えている。

それを変えろと言うのは、福音主義キリスト教やSeventh Day Adventistから、別な宗教であるローマカトリックやメインラインバプテストなどに改宗しろと言うに等しい。

出エジプト記を根拠に、モーセは最初のホメオパス(ホメオパシー医)だと主張するアフォDana Ullmanを見つけた。

これがどうホメオパシーかというと...

モーセの行動のもう一つの解釈は、モーセが人々をホメオパシーで治療したと言う者。まず、印象的で驚くべきは、聖書が完璧に、鉱物（金）を加工して（粉末化されて）、水で希釈するというホメオパシーレメディの創り方を記述していることだ。モーセの判断で興味をそそるのはレメディを金の雄牛から作ったことだ。金は飲み過ぎれば、骨の痛みや関節炎のような肉体および心理的な症状を引き起こすものとして知られている。したがって、幾十年にもわたり通常医療において、ある種の関節炎の治療に金塩が用いられてきたのは偶然ではない。心理学的には金は、失望や絶望的な気分を起こさせるものだとわかっている。そして、病気が進行すると、深く暗い憂鬱や自殺性鬱病を起こす。

モーセは、イスラエルの人々が偽神を崇めたのは、失望と絶望感によるもので、この砂漠での人々の行動が自滅的なものだと判断した。

モーセが何を考えたかは推測にすぎないが、このレメディをつくったモーセの行動は、ホメオパスのそれに非常のよく似ている。聖書もトーラーもモーセが希釈とシェイキングをしたと書いていないが、人々の病いの象徴である像を粉末にして希釈したという事実を取り上げていることは、刺激的な話だ。

確かに無機金塩類は劇物扱いであり、抗リウマチ薬に分類されている有機金化合物がある(オーラノフィンなど)。ただし、これは"有効成分"であって、"同種療法"(ホメオパー)ではない。

そして、Symptoms of Gold poisoning には金(塩)の毒として、 皮膚炎・頭痛・嘔吐・骨髄落ち込み(Bone marrow depression)・ネフローゼ症候群・黄疸・胆汁うっ滞・肺臓炎・胃腸出血・眼の金皮症が挙げられているが、鬱などは見当たらない。

もっとも、たとえ鬱を起こせたとしても、Dana Ullmanの解釈は誤りだ。というのは、この後、モーセは主に従わないで像を崇めた「おのおの自分の兄弟、友、隣人を殺せ」と命じているからだ。

わたしが彼らに、『だれでも金を持っている者は、それをはずしなさい』と言うと、彼らはわたしに差し出しました。わたしがそれを火に投げ入れると、この若い雄牛ができたのです。」

モーセはこの民が勝手なふるまいをしたこと、アロンが彼らに勝手なふるまいをさせて、敵対する者の嘲りの種となったことを見ると、宿営の入り口に立ち、「だれでも主につく者は、わたしのもとに集まれ」と言った。レビの子らが全員彼のもとに集まると、彼らに、「イスラエルの神、主がこう言われる。『おのおの、剣を帯び、宿営を入り口から入り口まで行き巡って、おのおの自分の兄弟、友、隣人を殺せ』」と命じた。

レビの子らは、モーセの命じたとおりに行った。その日、民のうちで倒れた者はおよそ三千人であった。モーセは言った。「おのおの自分の子や兄弟に逆らったから、今日、あなたたちは主の祭司職に任命された。あなたたちは今日、祝福を受ける。」

モーセのソリューションは殺戮であって、ホメオパシーではない。

なにやら中立機関による世論調査みたいなタイトルだが...

米国第3代大統領Thomas Jeffersonは政治家であるとともに1776〜1818の気温を記録[here]してみたり、建築家だったりと多才だった。

そんな「過去の偉人が創造論者だったので、創造論は正しい」という主張を創造論者たちはしたがる。

そんな創造論者の主張に「Thomas Jeffersonはインテリジェントデザイン支持者」というのがある：

これらの主張は何の意味も持たないが、実は地雷を1個踏んでいる...

そのThomas Jeffersonは、1781年に執筆し、1782〜1783年に加筆した"Notes on the State of Virginia"で次のようなことを書いている：

Comparing them by their faculties of memory, reason, and imagination, it appears to me, that in memory they are equal to the whites; in reason much inferior, as I think one could scarcely be found capable of tracing and comprehending the investigations of Euclid; and that in imagination they are dull, tasteless, and anomalous. It would be unfair to follow them to Africa for this investigation. We will consider them here, on the same stage with the whites, and where the facts are not apocryphal on which a judgment is to be formed. It will be right to make great allowances for the difference of condition, of education, of conversation, of the sphere in which they move. Many millions of them have been brought to, and born in America. Most of them indeed have been confined to tillage, to their own homes, and their own society: yet many have been so situated, that they might have availed themselves of the conversation of their masters; many have been brought up to the handicraft arts, and from that circumstance have always been associated with the whites. 創造論者たちは「進化論者は人種差別主義者だ」と言っているが、インテリジェントデザイン支持者の例として持ち出したThomas Jeffersonが人種差別な記述をしていたために、「インテリジェントデザイン支持者は人種差別主義者」という"自爆"になってしまっている。

PZ Myers準教授によれば、分裂したAnswers in Genesisの豪州側Creation Ministries Internationalが反進化論ドキュメンタリーを、インテリジェントデザイン運動のExpelledと同じ手法で作った:

They're doing it again. There's a new movie being released, The Voyage That Shook the World, that you can tell from the tagline ― "One man, one voyage, one book ignited a controversy that still rages today" ― is creationist trash (hint: there is no scientific controversy anymore on this matter). Look a little further, and you'll find it's produce by Creation Ministries International, which tells you right there what their agenda is: to tell lies for Jesus.
Here's where the parallel to Expelled lies…in the lies. They got several Darwin experts (Peter Bowler, Sandra Herbert, and Janet Browne) to appear in the "documentary" by concealing their motives. And then they admit to cherry-picking the interviews to put together their story.

製作したのは、"若い地球の創造論"ミニストリCreation Ministries Internationalで、これはAnswers in Genesis分裂後のオーストラリア側の団体である。分裂後の米国側であるAnswers in Genesisは派手にCreation Museumなどの商売を展開しているのに対して、ちょっと地味。

インテリジェントデザイン運動は昨年、映画の内容を隠蔽してPZ Myers準教授のインタビューを取って、試写会で自爆ネタを披露した：

これに対して、Creation Ministries Internationalが登場させた研究者たちPeter Bowlere(科学史・英国), Sandra Herbert(科学史・米国) Janet Browne(科学史・英国)と、生物学者ではなく、なんといっても、進化創造論争の有力な参加者ではない。とても地味な選択だ。

その分、興行的にもちょぼいかもしれない。

Christian Postの報道が、「破壊的ウィルスや細菌や寄生虫は、インテリジェント・イヴィルのデザインによるものだ」と主張する創造論者Dr. Ralph D. Winterを取り上げた。

Dr. Ralph D. Winter, who recently died at the age of 84, had argued that all violent forms of life including all disease pathogens are the works of an “intelligent evil power” that seeks to destroy God’s creation.

84歳で最近死亡したDr. Ralph D. Winterは、あらゆる病原体を含むすべての暴力的生命形態は、神の創造を破壊しようとする"インテリジェント・イヴィル・パワー"によるものだと論じた。

“Evangelicals have recently stressed the inevitable intelligence and design in nature, but they have not, to my knowledge, attempted to suggest that there is evidence of any evil intelligence and design,” said Winter.

“Our theologies that is, our formalized ways of attempting to think biblically were hammered out during centuries that were totally blind to the microscopic world,” he added. “Our current theological literature, to my knowledge, does not seriously consider disease pathogens from a theological point of view that is, are they the work of God or Satan?”

As a result, God has for far too long been taking the blame for Satan’s destructive works, Winter contended. And even Christians are confused over who is responsible for all the evil in the world, including disease and suffering. Some even claim that God wants diseases in the world.

“This is perhaps due to a theological tradition which does not understand demonic powers to have the ability to distort DNA,” he expressed.

But even as he battled multiple myeloma and lymphoma, Winter maintained that God is not responsible for the presence of evil but an intelligent evil is.

“The same goes for destructive viruses, bacteria and especially parasites,” Winter continued. “These represent incredibly ingenious evil. They represent, I am thinking, the involvement of intelligence. They are not just unguided evolution or, much less, errors in creation.”

「そのようなインテリジェント・イヴィルの存在を容認している神」という問題はあるものの、神義論（全知全能にして慈悲深い神の創造した世界に悪がある理由）のひとつの回答にはなっている。

ただし、これはインテリジェントデザインを批判する側のRichard B. Hoppeのアイデアである"複数デザイナー理論"のサブセットと位置づけられるだろう。

したがって、インテリジェントデザイン運動は、インテリジェント・イヴィルを受け入れないと思われる。

それはさておき、このインテリジェント・イヴィルは、インテリジェントデザイン運動と連鎖しているHIV否定論などと異なり、実害は小さめ。というのは、あらゆる医学な集団で病気と闘うことこそが、福音主義キリスト教と合致する行動になるからだ：

“To destroy the works of the devil is one major way in which our testimony of word and deed can glorify the true nature of our living God,” he said. “It is not an alternative to evangelism; it will make our evangelism more credible. It is to rectify our God’s damaged reputation.”

Ken Hamが主宰する"若い地球の創造論ミニストリ"Answers in Genesisを批判するNo Answers in Genesisによれば、Answers in Genesisがかつて、こんな記事をアップしていた：

An open letter to Christians to awaken them to the seriousness of the threat of the theory of Evolution to the Christian Faith! Our children are being targeted by evolutionists! ...

キリスト教信仰への進化論の脅威の重大性に気づかせる公開書簡。我々の子供たちが進化論者に狙われている。

The following words written to me recently by a mother touched my heart and once again emphasize the need for us in South Africa to take the threat of the theory of evolution to the Christian faith very seriously and for the need for the ministry of CSIS.

しかし、その内容は、白人政権時代におけるキリスト教と反進化論と人種差別のリンクを批判するものだった。

The concept of 'evolution', be it on a micro-biological scale or in relation to human development was excluded from all curricula formulated under the old Christian National Education (CNE) system in South Africa. The Christian National sentiment that grew out of the Afrikaner Nationalism of the 1930s and 1940s, was formalised for the first time in 1948 and accepted as the basis for National Education from 1967 to 1993 (Enslin 198:139-4: Christie 1991:171-73). Christian National Policy stated, amongst other things, that white children should 'receive a separate education from black children to prepare them for their respective superior and inferior positions in South African social and economic life, and all education should be based on Christian National principles (Christie 1991). ...

かつてのChristian Nationalの教育制度のもとでは、進化論の概念は、微生物学スケールから人間の進化まですべてが公式カリキュラムから排除された。1930年代から1940年代にかけて成長したオランダ系南アフリカ人の雰囲気が公式なものになったのは1948年で、それは1967年から1993年まで国民教育の基礎となった。Christian Nationalの政策は「社会および経済における白人の優位と黒人の劣位を反映して、白人と黒人の子供は別個の教育を受けるべきであり、教育はすべてChristian Nationalの原則に基づくべきだ」と言っていた。

Pupils were indoctrinated by the CN world-view through the formal curriculum, which omitted 'anti-biblical' concepts such as evolution, made Bible education compulsory and presented a version of history that, in the words of Dean and Sieborger (1995:32), "omitted, distorted or vilified the role of blacks, 'coloureds' and Asians in the country's past".

生徒たちは、公式カリキュラムによってChristian Nationalの世界観を注入された。

ノアは酔いからさめると、末の息子がしたことを知り、こう言った。「カナンは呪われよ／奴隷の奴隷となり、兄たちに仕えよ。」
また言った。「セムの神、主をたたえよ。カナンはセムの奴隷となれ。神がヤフェトの土地を広げ（ヤフェト）／セムの天幕に住まわせ／カナンはその奴隷となれ。」

ハムとカナンの肌の色について創世記は何も語っていないが、呪いによってカナンは黒人になったと考えられていた。特に南アフリカの白人たちのみの教義ではない。

In the Middle Ages, European scholars of the Bible picked up on the idea of viewing the "sons of Ham" or Hamites as cursed, possibly "blackened" by their sins. Though early arguments to this effect were sporadic, they became increasingly common during the slave trade of the 18th and 19th Centuries.[6]

これを「進化論者たちの攻撃の深刻さの例」としたために、Ken Hamたちは人種差別主義を支持したことになってしまった。そのことにKen Hamたちが気づいたのは、まさにNo Answers in Genesisの批判記事だった。そして、Ken Hamたちは、この記事を丸ごと削除し、"http://www.archive.org"やgoogle cacheからも削除した。

装身具としてのゲルマニウムは「効果もないが、副作用もない」で改めて決着を見ている：

(２) 　酸化ゲルマニウムについては、動物実験において予め腎臓機能障害を起こしておいた動物に酸化ゲルマニウムを投与した場合、腎臓機能障害が悪化するとのデータがあり、特に注意を要すること。

２ 　食品関係事業者に対しては、ゲルマニウムを食品の原材料として使用する場合は、予めその長期健康影響等安全性を確認して使用するよう指導すること。

さて、字だけでは面白くないので、SHOWに読ませてみた。

米国の進化論教育を守るNational Center for Science EducationのReport NCSEに掲載されたLW Retiefの記事「Calvin Meets the Hominins: A Brief History of Creationism in South Africa」によれば、南アフリカのオランダ系の人々の創造論志向は根が深いようである。

英国の統治に対抗するなかで、英語・リベラル・進化論を排除したのが始まりだという：

The inhabitants of the two Boer republics felt, with some justification, that their language, culture and religion the very fabric of their identity was under threat. The British High Commissioner for South Africa, Lord Milner, instituted a program of Anglicization that, among other things, enforced the use of English as the sole language of instruction at school.

A world-wide flood devastated the earth some thousands of years ago, and only a few humans, together with representatives of most animals, survived to give rise to the fauna and flora we know today. Species are immutable, and at most one can hope for micro-evolution within “kinds”. No proof of evolution exists.

教育方針には創世記9章25節〜10章32節の人種差別主義解釈が満ち溢れた。

Evolution was not discussed in biology textbooks; it was simply ignored.

アパルトヘイト政策の根拠として聖書があったらしい。

で、紆余曲折を経て、最後の白人政権であるデクラーク政権と最初の黒人政権であるマンデラ政権のもとでは、進化論は生物学のカリキュラムにちゃんと入った。これに対して、アフリカーンス教会はもちろん反対する。

There is also a deep irony embedded in the stances of the DRC and the RCSA towards evolution. The DRC had supported apartheid and opposed evolution, basing its views on biblical interpretation but has changed their views radically. The Reformed Churches rejected apartheid on scriptural grounds; it has now, for the same reasons, rejected evolution. A recent National Synod of the RCSA decried the teaching of evolution at school and requested Christian teachers not to present evolution as a fact in the classrooms.

進化論に対するDRCとRCSAのスタンスには深い皮肉がある。DRCは、ラジカルに変えた聖書の解釈に基づきアパルトヘイトを支持し進化論に反対する。RCSAは聖書に基づきアパルトヘイトを否定し、同じ理由で進化論を否定する。RCSAの最近の教会会議は、学校で進化論を教えることを非難し、キリスト教徒の先生たちに進化論を事実として授業で教えないように求めた。

アパルトヘイト支持で「ヨーロッパ人の子孫である南アフリカ人が有色人種と進化的祖先を共有しうるとは考えられない」ので進化論否定なDRCと、米国スタイルな人種差別反対＋進化論否定なRCSAという、米国の創造論者から見れば不愉快なことになっているようだ。
