創造論者が使ってはいけない「月の塵の厚さは若い月を証明する」by AiG

毎度おなじみのKen Ham主宰の若い地球の創造論サイトAnswers in Genesisの「Arguments we think creationists should NOT use」から本日は「月の塵」を見てみよう：

Moon-Dust thickness proves a young moon’. For a long time, creationists claimed that the dust layer on the moon was too thin if dust had truly been falling on it for billions of years. They based this claim on early estimatesby evolutionistsof the influx of moon dust, and worries that the moon landers would sink into this dust layer. But these early estimates were wrong, and by the time of the Apollo landings, NASA was not worried about sinking. So the dust layer thickness can’t be used as proof of a young moon (or of an old one either). See also Moon Dust and the Age of the Solar System (Technical).

「月の塵の厚さは若い月を証明する」　長きにわたって、創造論者は、本当に数十億年にわたって塵が降り積もったとすると、月の塵の層は薄すぎると主張していた。創造論者たちのこの主張は、進化論者による月の塵の流入の昔の推定と、月着陸船がこの塵に沈みこまないかという心配に依拠していた。しかし、これらの昔の推定は間違っており、アポロが着陸する頃までには、NASAは月着陸船の沈みこみを心配しなくなっていた。従って、塵の層の厚みは若い月の証拠（あるいは古い月の証拠）にはならない。

この記述は、「使ってはいけない論」というまとめ記事なので、あっさりめ。記事本体は一般向けとちょっとマニア向けの2つが用意されている。いずれも1993年のものである。従って、その時点で創造論者は「月の塵の厚さは若い月を証明する」を放棄したと思われる。

一般向けの記事「Moon-dust argument no longer useful」の初出はAiGの一般向け雑誌Creation Magazineの1993年9月号である：

For years, a common and apparently valid argument for a recent creation was to use uniformitarian assumptions to argue that the amount of dust on the moon was less than 10,000 years’ worth.

In an important paper, geologist Dr Andrew Snelling from Australia’s Creation Science Foundation [now Answers in Genesis], and former Institute for Creation Research graduate student Dave Rush, have examined in minute detail all the evidence relating to this argument.[1] They have shown that:

1. The amount of dust coming annually on to the earth/moon is much smaller than the amount estimated by (noncreationists) Pettersson, on which the argument is usually based.
   
2. Uniformitarian assumptions cannot therefore justifiably be turned against evolutionists to argue for a young age.
   
3. Most NASA scientists, in fact, were convinced before the Apollo landings that there was not much dust likely to be found there.
   

長い間、最近に世界が創造されたことにの一般で明らかにしっかりした論拠には、月面の塵の量が10000年分より少ないと論じるために均一説の仮定を使うことになっていた。

オーストラリアのCreation Science Foundation [現在の Answers in Genesis]の地質学者Dr. Andrew SnellingとInstitute for Creation Researchの元大学院生Dave Rushによる重要な論文[1]で、この論についてのあらゆる証拠を詳細に調べている：

1. この議論で一般的に論拠とされる(非創造論者)Petterssonによる地球および月に降る年間の塵の量の推定値に対して、実際の量は非常に少ない
   
2. 従って、均一説の仮定は、進化論者に対抗して、若い地球を正当化することには使えない。
   
3. 大部分のNASAの科学者は、実際、アポロ着陸の前に、月面にはそれほど多くの塵がないことを確信していた。

この後に負け惜しみのような記述もあるが、基本はこれだけで、撤退。

ちょっとマニア向けのAiGの雑誌TJ 1993 4月号の「Moon dust and the age of the solar system」にはかなり詳細な解説が掲載されている。長いのでちょろっとだけ紹介すると：

The Apollo investigations revealed a regolith at least several metres thick beneath the loose dust on the lunar surface. This regolith consists of lunar rock debris produced by impacting meteorites mixed with dust, some of which is of meteoritic origin. Apart from impacting meteorites and micrometeorites it is likely that there are no other lunar surface processes capable of both producing more dust and transporting it. It thus appears that the amount of meteoritic dust and meteorite debris in the lunar regolith and surface dust layer, even taking into account the postulated early intense meteorite and meteoritic dust bombardment, does not contradict the evolutionists’ multi-billion year timescale (while not proving it). Unfortunately, attempted counter-responses by creationists have so far failed because of spurious arguments or faulty calculations. Thus, until new evidence is forthcoming, creationists should not continue to use the dust on the moon as evidence against an old age for the moon and the solar system.

アポロの探査により、月の表面のさらさらした塵の下に少なくとも厚さ数メートルの表土があることがわかった。この表土は隕石落下の衝撃によってできた月の岩石破片と塵の混合物であり、塵の一部は隕石起源である。隕石と流星塵にの衝突の他に、塵を多く生産し、輸送できる月の表面のプロセスはなさそうである。従って、月の表土と塵の層の隕石および隕石破片による塵の量は、隕石および塵による太陽系初期の爆撃期を考えても、進化論者の数十億年の時間スケールを否定しないようである（証明されないが）。残念ながら、創造論者による反撃は、ここまで偽の議論または不完全な計算のため、失敗している。このように、新しい証拠が間に合うまで、霊魂創造論者は月と太陽系が古いことに反する証拠として月の塵を使い続けてはならない。

負け惜しみ込みではあるが、撤退である。

もっとも、創造論の動向にうとい自称創造論者たちは、1993年から13年が経過した2006年になっても、新たな材料のないままに月の塵を"若い地球と太陽系"の証拠だと主張している。そんな古色蒼然たるアホサイトで、日本語で書かれているのは久保有政氏の..
