IDのPaul Nelsonの成立しないアナロジー by Andrea Bottaro

インテリジェントデザインの本山たるDiscovery InstituteのフェローであるPaul Nelsonが、インテリジェントデザインの公式ブログIntelligent Design the Futureに2006年8月5日付けで「"When I Heard It Was Synthetic Hormone ..."(それが合成されたホルモンだと聞いたとき)」というエントリをポストした：

“…it is almost impossible to be caused by natural events. It’s kind of a downer.”
「…それが自然現象によるものだとは、ほとんどありえない。それはある種の鎮静剤だ。」

That’s how Greg LeMond responded to news that doping tests may have implicated 2006 Tour de France winner Floyd Landis [see the final paragraph of the story]. The World Anti-Doping Agency, which supervises the international standards for the licit and illicit use of hormones, defines the presence of “exogenous” (illicit) chemical agents as follows:

そのように、Greg LeMondは、ドーピング検査で2006年のトゥールドフランスの優勝者Floyd Landisが関与したというニュースを報じた（最後の段落参照）。ホルモン類の合法・違法の国際基準をさだめる世界アンチ・ドーピング機構は、外生（違法）な化学薬品を次のように定めている：

“Exogenous” refers to a substance which is not ordinarily capable of being produced by the body naturally.
"外生"とは、通常は体内で自然に生成できない物質のことを指す。

We can expect that Landis will defend himself by trying to find “natural” non-intelligent causes for the anomalous ratios discovered (and now confirmed) by testing. We can also expect testing agencies to weigh those proferred explanations in terms of their plausibility.

検査で発見され、今や確認された異常な比率について、Landisがノンインテリジェントな自然の原因をさがして自らを弁護するだろう。

What we won’t see is anyone saying that intelligent action in this instance, the deliberate use of intelligently-synthesized steroid compounds to gain a competitive advantage cannot be detected, in principle, because such inferences involve a universal negative (“natural causes cannot produce x”).

この例では、競争で有利になるように、インテリジェントに合成されたステロイド合成物を慎重に使ったことのような、インテリジェントな行動を、そのような推論は（自然の原因はxを生成できないという）全称否定だからという理由で、原理的に検出できないと誰も主張しない。

It is possible to catch cheaters. Happens all the time, in fact.
ペテン師を捕えることは可能だ。事実、常にそうだ。

だから、インテリジェントデザインは、生物にデザインを見つけられるのだというのがPaul Nelsonの主張。

毎度おなじみ、メタファーやアナロジーで語るインテリジェントデザイン。もちろん、メタファーやアナロジーは説明のわかりやすさの手段だが、たいがいの場合、誤解のもと。

で、これに対して、進化論ブログPanda's Thumbの共同執筆者のひとりAndrea Bottaroは2006年8月7日付けのエントリ「Doping ID」でツッコミをいれた。

for Landis’s blood data to be natural, we would need to postulate entirely new physiological mechanisms, whereas for, say, the flagellum to have evolved naturally, only known evolutionary mechanisms would have to apply.

Landisの血液のデータが自然の原因によるものだとするには、我々はまったく新しい整理メカニズムを仮定しなければならない。しかし、バクテリアの鞭毛が自然に進化するには、既知の進化のメカニズムを適用するだけである。

Matzkeが提案した鞭毛の進化経路には何らの新規なメカニズムも奇跡も必要ない。突然変異による漸進的進化だけ。

さらに、Andrea Bottaroは、SETIのときと同様の批判を加えている。すなわち、Landisの例では、デザイナーとして想定される者たちが特定されて（本人とかトレーナーとか）いて、動機が明らか（勝つため）で、使用したものも想定されている。これに対して、インテリジェントデザインの場合は、デザイナーの属性・動機・方法について言及されていない。

もちろん、Andrea Bottaroは：

Suppose that, instead of finding the unusual hormone features in a professional cyclist’s blood, scientists had found them in a newly discovered, isolated human population deep in the Amazon jungle. Would the same inference of design now be justified? Or would scientists hypothesize and test new hypotheses of natural mechanisms causing the anomalies, before assuming purposeful doping?

プロのサイクリストの血液に異常なホルモンを見つけるかわりに、科学者が新たに発見したアマゾンのジャングル深くで孤立した部族の血液にステロイド合成物を見つけたとしよう。デザイン論の結論はここでも正しいだろうか？　あるいは科学者は意図的なドーピングを仮定する前に、この異常を起こす自然のメカニズムの仮説を立てて、検証しようとするだろうか

とまっとうなツッコミも挙げている。

SETIとIDのアナロジーでも明らかになっているが、アナロジーは説明の手段になっても、理論の一部にはなれないということ。
