アリゾナ州のローカル新聞はCoyne解任説を否定する記事を掲載

バチカン観測所の施設があるアリゾナ州のローカル新聞arizona daily starのDan Sorensonによる2006年8月29日付けの記事「Observatory exit not about evolution 」によれば：

The new director of the Vatican Observatory says the retirement of his predecessor after 28 years is simply that, and has nothing to do with the outgoing executive's public statements in support of evolution.

バチカン観測所の新所長は、前任者が28年の在任後に退任したのは、進化論支持の声明によるものでは、まったくないと語った。

A recent story in an English tabloid proclaimed that Coyne had been fired for his public criticism of Intelligent Design.

最近、英国のタブロイド紙がCoyneはインテリジェントデザイン批判により首になったと報じた。

In an e-mail statement sent to "friends" on an Internet mailing list, Funes said the rumors that Coyne was replaced because of his stance on Intelligent Design were "absolutely false." He said Coyne requested in May that church officials in Rome replace him.

Funesは友人たちのメーリングリストで、Coyneの交代がインテリジェントデザインが理由だというのはまったくの誤りだと書いた。Funesは、Coyneが5月にローマの教会に対して交代を要請していたと、言った。

さて、英国DailyMailとGurdianは、事象の連続からのCoyne解任を推測という形で記事を書き、これに対して米国の一部の新聞から、Funesの発言を基にこれを否定する記事が出ているという状況。

米国教育省は連邦補助金対象の専攻分野から進化生物学をはずした...か？

進化論ブログPanda's ThumbのMatt Brauerによる2006年8月25日付けのエントリ「SMART Grant Updateによれば、米国教育省の補助金プログラムの対象分野から進化生物学が欠落していて、それが2006年8月24日に訂正された。

The Chronicle of Higher Education: News Blogの2006年8月25日付けのエントリ「Education Dept. Restores Evolutionary Biology to List of Majors Eligible for Grants」によれば：

The U.S. Education Department made it official today that students majoring in evolutionary biology will be eligible for a new federal grant program designed to reward students concentrating in engineering, mathematics, science, or certain foreign languages.

米国教育省は今日、工学や数学や科学や特定外国語を先行する学生たちにが受けられる新しい連邦補助金プログラムの資格が進化生物学を専攻する学生にもあることを公式にした。

The department’s original list of majors that qualify for the grants, awarded under the National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant program, did not contain evolutionary biology. That absence, first reported on Tuesday by The Chronicle, was made conspicuous by the fact that very few other hard-science majors were missing. And the line where evolutionary biology would have appeared, according to the government’s classification scheme, was blank.

National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grantプログラムのもとで与えられる補助金対象とする専攻の教育省のもともとのリストには進化生物学がなかった。この欠落はまず火曜日にThe Chronicleで報じられ、ハードサイエンス専攻で欠落したものがほとんどなかったことから、非常に目立つことになった。そして、進化生物学が現れた線は、政府の分類法計画通りに、空白だった。

Those facts raised eyebrows among education leaders and scientists because the teaching of evolution has been highly contentious in recent years.

進化論を教えることが近年非常に論議を呼んでいたため、それらの事実は教育界のリーダーたちと科学者の眉をつり上げることとなった。

On Thursday the department reiterated that the omission had been accidental (The Chronicle, August 25). Today the department announced that it had updated the list to restore “certain majors” that had been “inadvertently omitted.”

木曜日に教育省は欠落は偶然だったとくりかえした(The Chronicle 8月25日)。今日、教育省はリストが更新され、"不注意に欠落していた特定専攻"を復活したとアナウンスした。

"Recent news reports have suggested that Evolutionary Biology is not an eligible major under the new National SMART grant program. This is incorrect and in fact the opposite is true. Evolutionary biology is a major eligible to receive National SMART grants under the 'Ecology, Evolution, Systematics and Population Biology' category of majors.

"The misunderstanding occurred as the result of a draft document that omitted evolutionary biology from a list of majors put forth for use by colleges.
