The University of Kansasで2006年9月7日にあった進化論サイドのDr. Ken Millerの講演に参加したインテリジェントデザイン支持者が、インテリジェントデザインの本山たるDiscovery InstituteのCasey Luskinにメールを出した。これは有神論的進化論[神は進化を通じて人間を創造した。神は直接介入しない。]を批判するものだったので、お笑い担当Casey Luskinは公式ブログで紹介した。
これについて、進化論ブログPanda's Thumbの執筆者のひとりであるthe University of Hawaiiの動物学の院生Mike Dunfordは、そのまま自分に跳ね返ってくるだろうと、自らのブログThe Questionable Authorityの2006年9月22日付けのエントリ「A little more irony.」で指摘した。
まずMike Dunfordが批判対象とした部分は：
So essentially, both Dawkins and Miller see no evidence of design, and their philosophy as to how evolution works is the same, yet Dawkins follows that evidence and declares the world is without a designer and Miller claims to believe there is a designer. Bizarre. So Miller apparently, like most TE's, holds to his religious beliefs on faith ~alone~. That's the problems with TE's - they can give you no reason whatsoever as to why they believe what they do in regard to their religious beliefs other than they take it all on faith.
基本的にDawkinsとMillerはデザインに証拠がないと見ており、進化がどう働くかについて哲学も同じだ。しかし、Dawkinsは証拠に従って、世界にデザイナーがいないと明言する。Millerはデザイナーがいると信じていると主張する。奇怪だ。Millerは明らかに、大半の有神論的進化論者のように、信仰"だけ"の宗教信条にしがみつく。これが有神論的進化論の問題だ。信仰以外に宗教信条を信じている理由を何も提示できない。
これについて2点を衝いている。まずは信仰に証拠は必要か：
At least some pro-Intelligent Design folks dislike theistic evolution because it requires that the believer actually have faith in something that there is no evidence for. Silly me. There I was thinking that true faith -especially Christian faith- isn't actually supposed to depend on evidence. ...
少なくとも、あるインテリジェントデザイン支持者たちは、有神論的進化論が証拠がないものを信仰するように要求するので、有神論的進化論を嫌う。真の信仰、特にキリスト教の信仰は、実際に証拠に依存するものではないと私が考えるのだが。
そして、2点目はインテリジェントデザインに証拠はないと知らしめることができれば、それでおしまい：
It's good to know, though, that there seems to be some common ground between those IDers and folks like PZ Myers. Both think it's silly to believe without solid, tangable, physical evidence. Now if we could just get the IDers to figure out that the physical evidence really isn't there...
しかし、これがインテリジェントデザイン信者と、PZ Myers[Panda's Thumbs執筆者のひとり]の共通基盤であるらしいことを知るのはよいことだ。いずれも、動かぬ、明白な、物的証拠なしに信じることは愚かだと考えている。インテリジェントデザインに証拠がないと知らしめることができれば...
インテリジェントデザインの証拠はあくまでも"God of the gaps"論[科学に説明できないことは神様のせいなのさ]である。すなわち、「進化論は間違っているからデザインだ!!」なので、実は証拠はまったくない。
