インテリジェントデザインの次の名前は"evolution"

Panda's Thumbの執筆者のひりEd Braytonは、個人ブログDispaches from the culture warsにアップしたエントリ「The Anti-Evolution Movement: Phase 4」で、West Michigan Freethought Associationでの講演で、インテリジェントデザイン(Intelligent design)に代わる新たな反進化論の名前の予想したが、これはハズレだっと書いた。

Ed Braytonはまず、これまでの3つのフェーズを次のように記述した。

I began by describing what I characterized as the first three phases of an anti-evolution movement that began about 30 seconds after Darwin published On the Origin of Species. Those phases represented the evolving legal and political stratagies used to oppose evolution and to diminish its acceptance and influence. Phase one, which lasted until 1968, was simply to ban the teaching of evolution; Epperson v Arkansas brought that phase to an end by overturning such laws as unconstitutional. Phase two was the "dual model" approach, laws requiring equal time for "creation science" and "evolution science"; Edwards v Aguillard brought that phase to an end in 1987 by overturning such laws. Phase three, of course, was to relabel creation science as "intelligent design" and try to sneak it past the courts; Kitzmiller v Dover, though only a district court ruling, may well have brought phrase three to an end.

なお、創造科学は"若い地球の創造論"であり、インテリジェントデザインは"若い地球の創造論"と"古い地球の創造論"の両方との互換性を目指したものである。また、Edwards v Aguillard裁判の直後に、創造科学の本拠地Institute for Creation ResearchのWendell R. Birdは"Theory of abrupt appearance"[Wendell R. Bird:The Origin of Species Revisited]を唱えたが、フェーズ2を続航することはできなかった。

フェーズ4の反進化論運動の名称として、Ed Braytonは"sudden emergence theory"を挙げた。

ところが、Panda's Thumbの執筆者のひとりであるUniversity of MinnesotaのPZ Myers准教授は、個人ブログPharyngulaのエントリ「The rebranding of Intelligent Design」において、インテリジェントデザインに代わる名称を"evolution"だと主張した。

The new textbook from the gang at the DI, intended to replace Of Pandas and People is going to be titled "Explore Evolution".

If state education standards mandate instruction in evolution and if the laws of the land make teaching Intelligent Design creationism illegal, well, they'll adapt and teach "evolution" … it's just that this version of "evolution" flouts the ideas of experts, ignores the evidence, misrepresents the theory, and promotes a role for design in "evolutionary" history.

"Of Pandas and People"に代わって、Discovery Instituteのギャングの出す新しい教科書のタイトルは「Explore Evolution」である。

州教育基準が進化論を必須にし、インテリジェントデザイン創造論の教育を非合法としたら、彼らは適応して、"進化論"を教えるようになる。このバージョンの"進化論"では、専門家の考えを嘲り、証拠を無視し、理論を誤って提示し、進化史におけるデザインの役割を宣伝する。

PZ Myers准教授によれば、"teach the controversy"や"critical analysis of theory of evolution"とかの姑息な手での間つなぎの後は、"evolution"によるフェーズ4になりそうだという。

Their work relies on ID- that is being able to do what unintelligent, blind/ undirected process didn’t/ couldn’t/ wouldn’t do. ID is NOT anti-evolution. There isn’t anything in ID that states evolution doesn’t occur.
