SI Akasofu:"Notes on Climate Change"を読んでみた

宇宙空間・超高層大気・地球電磁気の思い切り著名な研究者にして、Univ. of AlaskaのInternational Arctic Research Centerの設立者でもあるDr. Syun-Ichi Akasofuの隠居後のお楽しみ？らしい「Notes on Climate Change」について。

目次には5項目が挙げられているか、実際にテクニカルな話をしているのは2.のみ：

2.の結論として以下のような項目を挙げているが：

1. Natural components are important and significant, so they should not be ignored.
   自然変動成分は重要かつ大きいので、それは無視すべきではない
   
2. Two natural changes after 1800 are identified in this note: a linear increase of about +0.5°C/100 years and fluctuations superposed on the linear change.

3. It is likely that the Earth is still recovering from the LIA.

主たる論点は:

• 過去150年の変動は、データ解析上は、小氷期からの回復フェーズという線形増加トレンドの上に、短期変動がのっているとみてよい
  
• GCM(Global climate model)は北極圏の気温変動を再現できていないので、定量的な議論には使えない

といったところ。一般的な温暖化論争ネタの範囲内にあって、特にAkasofuスペシャルな主張があるというわけではない。北極のUniv. Alaskaを本拠地としているので、北極圏の気温を重視してみたという程度。

論理の流れを追いかけてみると、まず全球の1800〜2000年の気温変化と、その5年移動平均と、線形近似を並べる。そして、線形近似の上下で色を分けて塗る：

直近200年の変動は、小氷期からの回復フェーズと思われる線形な上昇トレンドと、それにのった波だと解釈する。データは新規ではなく、その扱いも特に新奇なものでもない。

さらに超長期の変動から、次第に直近の変動へと過去気温の推定結果を見ていく：

直近200年の変動は、50万年スケールの変動全体からみれば、自然変動の範囲内だと言う。しかし、これも特に新奇な主張ではない。

もともと、インテリジェントデザインは"若い地球の創造論"との互換性を持つようにデザインされている。このため、地球および生命についての時系列に言及しない。

つい最近も、インテリジェントデザイン理論家Dr. William Dembskiと仲間たちのブログの執筆者兼モデレータであるO'Learyがうれしそうに、次のようなエントリをポストしている：

温暖化否定論の旗手Inhofe上院議員は戦い続ける

James Inhofe上院議員は1994年に上院選挙で初当選。2002年にはFrank Luntzのおかげで共和党が上院を制し、このとき "Environmental and public work committee"(環境および公共委員会)委員長となった。そして、2003年7月28日に議会で演説したInhofeは、次のように述べた：

Over the past 2 hours, I have offered compelling evidence that catastrophic global warming is a hoax. That conclusion is supported by the painstaking work of the nation's top climate scientists.

これについて、＊＊否定論をネタにしているDr. Mark Hoofnagle(科学哲学)と弁護士Chris Hoofnagleのdenialism blogは、あっさり次のように斬ってみている：

But hey, that's not reason in itself to reject this latest nonsense from Senator Inhofe out of hand. Nor is his recent announcement he's proud to be referred to as a holocaust denier. The best reason to reject this nonsense immediately is that they couldn't even break 400 signatures.
上院議員Inhofeの最新のナンセンスを否定する理由はナンセンスの中身じゃない。ホロコースト否定論者だといわれるのを誇っているからでもない。このナンセンスをただちに否定する最大の理由は署名が400も超えないからだ。

Inhofe上院議員は、Discovery Instituteなどとは方法が違う

「ダーウィニズムを疑う署名700 by Discovery Insitute」や「AIDSの原因はHIVではない署名2400」と違って、Inhofe上院議員の報告書は、研究者による公表論文・報道記事などから温暖化否定あるいは温暖化懐疑論ととれるものを集めたもの。ネット署名よりは実体がありそうに見える。

しかし、Texas A&M Universityの気候変動を専門とするProf. Andrew Desslerなどが指摘しているように、別分野の研究者が混じっている。たとえば

• Legendary inventor Ray Kurzweil, described as "an inventor whose work in artificial intelligence has dazzled technological sophisticates for four decades" (発明家）
  
• Dr. Robert H. Essenhigh, a Bailey Professor of Energy Conversion in the department of Mechanical Engineering at Ohio State University, who has published over 45 peer-reviewed studies, dismissed climate fears. (機械工学）
  
• Applied Physicist and Engineer Dr. Jeffrey A. Glassman wrote an October 24, 2006 paper entitled "The Acquittal of Carbon Dioxide." In the abstract of the paper appearing in Rocket Scientist's Journal, Glassman wrote, "Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is the product of oceanic respiration due to the well-known but under-appreciated solubility pump.（このRocket Scientist's JournalはDr. Glassmanのブログだと思うけど)
  
• Economist Dr. Owen McShane, chair of the policy panel of the New Zealand based International Climate Science Coalition,(エコノミスト）

こういった人々を差し引くと、かなり目減りしそう（数が多くて、まだ見きれていないが）。

まっとうな気候変動・気象関係の研究者もリストアップされており、水増ししなければ、説得力も出るかもしれないのだが....


ちなみに、日本人はたったひとりだけ

Univ. Alaskaの地球物理を率いていたDr. Syun-Ichi Akasofu(1930〜)だけが入っている。宇宙空間物理・超高層大気分野のまさに著名な研究者であり、google scholarで見てもわかるように、本業である太陽風・磁気圏相互作用やサブストーム関連の、J.Geophys.Res.やPlanet. Space Sci.などに掲載された論文がわんさか。

気候関連は教授隠居後と思われる2004年の1本だけみたい...

インテリジェントデザイン運動の内輪の査読付論文誌にしようとして力尽きてしまったiscid (International Society for Complexity, Information, and Design)は、今ではモデレータつきBBSとしてのみ生き残っている。

基本的にインテリジェントデザイン運動では、BlogもBBSもモデレートされているのが普通。数少ないインテリジェントデザイン理論家Dr. Dembskiと仲間たちのブログUncomon Descentはコメントとトラックバックにモデレータがいて、気に食わないものは削除＆アカウント削除。Discovery Institute公式ブログはコメント欄なしで、トラックバックもおそらくモデレータつき。同様の習性が、このiscid BBSでも見られる。

Antievolutionists fail to understand how natural selection operates. They fancy that all existing species were generated by supernatural fiat a few thousand years ago, pretty much as we find them today. But what is the sense of having as many as 2 or 3 million species living on earth? If natural selection is the main factor that brings evolution about, any number of species is understandable: natural selection does not work according to a foreordained plan, and species are produced not because they are needed for some purpose but simply because there is an environmental opportunity and genetic wherewithal to make them possible. Was the Creator in a jocular mood when he made Psilopa petrolei for California oil fields and species of Drosophila to live exclusively on some body-parts of certain land crabs on only certain islands in the Caribbean? The organic diversity becomes, however, reasonable and understandable if the Creator has created the living world not by caprice but by evolution propelled by natural selection. It is wrong to hold creation and evolution as mutually exclusive alternatives. I am a creationist and an evolutionist. Evolution is God’s, or Nature’s method of creation. Creation is not an event that happened in 4004 BC; it is a process that began some 10 billion years ago and is still under way.

反進化論者たちは、自然選択がどのように働くか理解できていない。彼らは数千年前に超自然の命令で、現存する種すべてが、ほぼ今日の姿で、生み出されたと思っている。しかし、地球上で200万〜300万もの種が生きているとはどういうことだろうか？ 自然選択が進化をもたらす主たる要因であるなら、かくも種が多いことは理解できる。自然選択は、予め定められた計画に従って働くものではない。そして、種は、ある目的のために必要だから生み出されるのではない。環境に機会があり、それを可能とする遺伝子の手段があるから、種は生み出される。創造主がPsilopa petroleiをカリフォルニア油田に創り、カリブ海の特定の島だけに生息する特定のオオガニの特定の部位だけに依存して暮らすショウジョウバエの種を創ったとき、創造主は浮かれていたのだろうか？ しかし、創造主が気まぐれによってでなく、自然選択によって推進される進化によって生物世界を構築したのであれば、生命の多様性は、合理的で理解できるようになる。創造と進化を排他的な選択肢と見るのは間違っている。私は創造論者であり進化論者である。進化は神あるいは自然の創造の方法である。創造は紀元前4004年に起きた出来事ではない。約100億年前に始まった過程であり、いまも進行中である。

現在の"若い地球の創造論者"たちは、ノアの箱舟に積載した動物の数と、現在種の数の大きな差異を埋めるための屁理屈として、自然選択を創造論に組み込んでしまっている。しかし、1973年当時はそこまでの考えすらなく、自然選択拒否だった。ここは、そんな時代に対応した記述。

それと、Theodosius Dobzhanskyは現在の"有神論的進化論"の形式で、創造と進化の折り合いをつけていたことも注目すべき点。その上で、「進化の光に...」を見ると：

Does the evolutionary doctrine clash with religious faith? It does not. It is a blunder to mistake the Holy Scriptures for elementary textbooks of astronomy, geology, biology, and anthropology. Only if symbols are construed to mean what they are not intended to mean can there arise imaginary, insoluble conflicts. As pointed out above, the blunder leads to blasphemy: the Creator is accused of systematic deceitfulness.

進化学説は宗教信仰と衝突するだろうか？　そんなことはない。旧約聖書および新約聖書を天文学、地質学、生物学と人類学の基本の教科書と間違えることは、大きな誤りである。象徴が意味することを目的としないものを、意味するのだと解釈したときのみ、想像上の解決不可能な衝突が起きる。前述のような大きな誤りは冒涜につながる。創造主は組織的詐欺で責められることになる。

One of the great thinkers of our age, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, wrote the following: Is evolution a theory, a system, or a hypothesis? It is much more -- it is a general postulate to which all theories, all hypotheses, all systems much henceforward bow and which they must satisfy in order to be thinkable and true. Evolution is a light which illuminates all facts, a trajectory which all lines of thought must follow -- this is what evolution is. Of course, some scientists, as well as some philosophers and theologians, disagree with some parts of Teilhard’s teachings; the acceptance of his worldview falls short of universal. But there is no doubt at all that Teilhard was a truly and deeply religious man and that Christianity was the cornerstone of his worldview. Moreover, in his worldview science and faith were not segregated in watertight compartments, as they are with so many people. They were harmoniously fitting parts of his worldview. Teilhard was a creationist, but one who understood that the Creation is realized in this world by means of evolution.

我らが時代の偉大なる思想家Pierre Teilhard de Chardinは次のように書いた。進化は、理論か、体系か、それとも仮説か？　それ以上のものだ。 --あらゆる理論と仮説と体系が今後、従うべき基本原理であり、考えられることが真であるために満たさなければならない基本原理である。進化は、すべての事実、そして思索のすべての線がたどらなければならない軌跡を照らす光である。 -- これが進化なのだ。もちろん、ある科学者たちは、ある哲学者たちや神学者たちと同じく、Teilhardの教えのある部分に同意しない。Teilhardの世界観を受け入れることは、普遍概念に達しない。しかし、Teilhardはほんとうに宗教的であり、キリスト教が世界観の基礎にあったことに疑う余地はない。さらに、Teilhardの世界観では、科学と信仰は防水壁で分離されるものではなかった。科学と宗教はTeilhardの世界観の中で調和していた。Teilhardは創造論者だが、創造が進化という形で、この世界では認識されると思っていた。

Teilhard de Chardinの折り合いのつけ方が、「オメガポイント」だった。この言葉は、「意識の複雑さの最終的な最大レベル」を指すもの。Teilhard de Chardinは、天国に見つかる神性よりも、むしろ、進化を、エシャトンや神と同定される"最終統合"へ向かって収束する過程だと考えた。

That is no longer contested even by the most materialistic, or at all events by the most agnostic of humanitarians. Therefore it should culminate forwards in some sort of supreme consciousness. But must not that consciousness, if it is to be supreme, contain in the highest degree what is the perfection of our consciousness ---the illuminating involution of the being upon itself ? ...

ここで思うのは「進化の光に当ててみなければ、生物学のどんな知識も意味を持たない」という"強い表現"をタイトルとするエッセイが、創造と進化・神と自然の衝突ではなく調和を語っていること。著者Theodosius Dobzhanskyは自らを「Creationist and Evolutionist」と呼び、もともとの表現を言いだしたTeilhard de Chardinは、オメガポイントを唱えたイエズス会士であること。

なんとなく、このような強い表現は、Richard DawkinsやPZ Myers準教授のような人が言ってそうな気がしていたのだが、ちょっと違った。

いわゆる東方からの三賢者「メルキオール Melchior （黄金-王権の象徴、青年の姿の賢者）、バルタザール Balthasar （乳香-神性の象徴、壮年の姿の賢者）、カスパール Casper（没薬-将来の受難である死の象徴、老人の姿の賢者）」が幼子イエスに贈り物を捧げるシーンなのだが...

ただし、ま聖公会とカトリックは抗議中らしいけど：

「AIDS感染予防はシャワー」なJacob Zumaが事実上、次期南アフリカ共和国大統領に

Associated Pressの報道によれば、火曜日(2007/12/18)に開かれた、南アフリカ共和国の与党ANCの党大会で、Jacob Zumaが現職のThabo Mbeki大統領を2329対1505で破り、党首に選出された。大統領選挙は2009年の予定だが、事実上、Jacob Zumaが次期大統領に決まったことになる。

さて、Thabo Mbeki大統領は「HIVはAIDSの原因ではない」というHIV否定論者であり、その盟友にして厚生相Tshabalala-Msimangも「レモンとガーリックでAIDSが防げる」と主張するHIV否定論者である。やっと、Thabo Mbekiの退場が決まったことになるのだが、これがちっともめでたくない。

NPRの報道によれば、Jacob Zumaはかつて副大統領だったが、強姦の罪で裁判にかけられ、2006年に合意の上でのセックスであることが法廷で明らかにされて無罪となった件でThabo Mbekiに解任されている。しかも、この裁判でJacob Zumaは「AIDS感染防止のためのとった行動が、シャワーを浴びることだけだった」と証言している。これだとAIDS対策は改善されそうにない。

また、英国Gurdianの報道によれば、Thabo Mbekiがインテリであるのに対して、Jacob Zumaは正規の教育を受けたことがない。民族衣装を着ることがほとんどなかったMbekiに対して、Zumaはヒョウ皮を身につけることもある。Associated Pressの報道によれば、Zumaには複数の妻がおり、子供の数は言わない、あるいは言えない。

余計悪くなりそうな予感が...
