問いが「我々はどこから来たのか」におよぶとき、NOMAは成り立たず、科学と宗教は対立するとIntelligent Design NetworkのHarris and Calvertは言う。すなわち、有神論は「目的のためにデザインされた」と答えるが、科学は「目的やデザインは幻想だ」と答えるのだと。

方法論的自然主義という科学の原則に立つ限り、科学の版図内においては「目的やデザインは幻想」である。と同時に、人間に目的や意味があるのか、そして、あるとするなら、それは何かについて関知しない。

しかし、Harris and Calvertにとって、「科学の版図内において」というのは意味を持たないようだ。おそらく、彼らにとって「科学」は「自然についての真理」であり、それは「宗教の版図」だからだろう。

Benjamin Wikerにとって、人間性すなわち道徳の起源は神に与えられたものである。その道徳の起源について、Kin selectionのような概念から説明をつけること、すなわち"自然な過程"によって、道徳心が生み出されたと言うことは、NOMA侵犯以外のなにものでもない。

道徳心の起源について進化心理学が迫ったとしても、超越的な神が"自然な過程"を通じて人間に道徳心を実装したという考えを否定することは原理的に不可能である。それは、"自然な過程"の背後にあるもの、自然法則や物理定数や初期値などを定めた存在については、科学の手の及ぶところではないからだ。

しかし、Wikerにとって「超越的な神が"自然な過程"を通じて人間に道徳心を実装した」というポジションそのものが受け入れられないもの。それを否定することはNOMA侵犯なのである。

同様の主張は繰り返し行われる。Paul Johnsonの記述は、典型的なものだ：

「我々はどこから来たのか」という問いに対して「目的のためにデザインされた」と答えること。

それは、鳥の翼、人間の眼、細菌の鞭毛、血液凝固過程、免疫系などあらゆる生物の"デザイン"の見事さから、それらが、意識と知性と意図を持った存在による"デザイン"だと主張すること。それこそがWilliam Paleyの代表される、神の存在証明のひとつの形式としての、デザイン論である。

これは、人間の眼の構造、細菌の鞭毛の分子モータ、血液凝固過程カスケード、免疫系のメカニズムの上など「自然についての知識」を高みに立って、睥睨し、その"デザイン"こそ神の証拠と高らかに宣告する形式になっている。そのようなデザインは神が「目的」を以って人間を創造したことの証拠であるのだと。

生物の"デザイン"という概念に魅入られた者たちが、そうやって、人間の存在の目的や意味を主張するようだ。

Kumicitにはそのような魅力を感じることはできないが、敬虔なキリスト教徒にとっては魔力に近い効果があるのかもしれない。進化生物学者で敬虔なキリスト教徒であるProf. Kenneth Millerは次のように言う：

"The idea that there is 'design' in nature is very appealing," [Kenneth] Miller said. "People want to believe that life isn't purposeless and random. That's why the intelligent design movement wins the emotional battle for adherents despite its utter lack of scientific support.

生物学上は、"apparent design"(デザインのように見えるもの)以上のものはないはず。学術上の意味がまったくない、うざいReligious right対策だけのために、"デザイン"という概念を導入するというのは、まっとうな研究の実行とは思えないのだが。
それはさておき、科学という方法によって得られた、自然界についての知識に対して、高みに立って科学を見下ろす宗教。その高みより、生物の"デザイン"を神の証、ひいては人間の存在意義と目的を主張すること。れ自体は何ら問題はない。同じ地平の上に科学と宗教が並び立っていないのだから、互いに自らの都合で突き進める。


科学を見下ろす高みって、どこ？

ところで、「科学を見下ろす高み」というのが実は問題。たとえば、Dr. Michael Beheが「細菌の鞭毛はデザインだ」と言うとき、

• 鞭毛は分子モータだという生物学の知識
  
• その進化経路が不明という生物学の隙間

の２つの足場の上に立っている。ちなみに、「デザインだ」は科学の版図外の主張。科学にはそこまで主張する能力はない。ただわからないというだけ。

でもって、ある日、Nick Maztkeがやってきて、進化経路を示すと言う形で、「進化経路不明」という足場を蹴倒す。当然、Dr. Michael Beheは崩れる足場とともに落下。高みに立っているので、抵抗する術はまったくない。


もちろん、新たな隙間を見つけて、そこに足場を組み上げられないことはない。分解されてしまった鞭毛のパーツごとに、進化経路不明と主張して、そこを足場にすればいい。ただ、その足場も永遠に安泰を保証されているわけではない。誰かがやってきて、蹴倒していくかもしれない。

宗教から見れば、科学とは宗教の教義の寄って立つ足場を蹴倒しに来る者。NOMAなどありえない...と。


抵抗するためには、科学という地上に降りた宗教

足場を守るためには、地上に降りて戦うしかないわけだが...

それは「地球から見る限り地球も宇宙も6000歳で、自然選択による種形成は創造論だ」な"若い地球の創造論"だったり、「生物は変化しない。超古代文明は存在した」なHarun Yahyaバージョンの"古い地球の創造論"だったりする。

あるいはHarris and Calvertだったり、Paul Johnsonだったり、Benjamin Wikerだったりする。

それって、科学の版図に対して攻撃をかける宗教。非科学あるいは反科学。
すなわち宗教からのNOMA侵犯。

The reasons for this intellectual shift are no doubt complex. Yet clearly the demise of the design argument itself has played an important role in the loss of this traditional Western belief. Beginning in the Enlightenment, philosophers such as David Hume raised seemingly powerful objections against the design argument. Hume claimed that classical design arguments depended on a weak and flawed analogy between biological organisms and human artifacts. Yet for most, it was not the arguments of the philosophers that disposed of design, but the theories of scientists, particularly that of Charles Darwin. If the origin of biological organisms could be explained naturalistically, as Darwin claimed, then explanations invoking an intelligent designer were unnecessary and even vacuous. Searches for extrasolar planets have uncovered an astonishing diversity of planetary systems, yet the frequency of solar system analogs remains unknown. The gravitational microlensing planet search method is potentially sensitive to multiple-planet systems containing analogs of all the solar system planets except Mercury. We report the detection of a multiple-planet system with microlensing. We identify two planets with masses of 0.71 and 0.27 times the mass of Jupiter and orbital separations of 2.3 and 4.6 astronomical units orbiting a primary star of mass 0.50 solar mass at a distance of 1.5 kiloparsecs. This system resembles a scaled version of our solar system in that the mass ratio, separation ratio, and equilibrium temperatures of the planets are similar to those of Jupiter and Saturn. These planets could not have been detected with other techniques; their discovery from only six confirmed microlensing planet detections suggests that solar system analogs may be common.

このインテリジェントデザイン版の神義論の例は色々見られるが、今日は、Acton Instituteのフェローでインテリジェントデザイン支持者のjay W. Richardsの例を見てみる。Jay W. Richardsは「悪いデザインもデザインだ」という建前を書き、「悪いと見えても研究が進めば良いとわかる」と述べた上で、次のように書いている：

The Fall of Man, according to Christian Scriptures, affected not just human beings but all of creation. The Apostle Paul wrote that all of creation is groaning as in pains of childbirth. That means that while the world is still God’s good creation, it’s not the way it’s supposed to be.

でも、インテリジェントデザイン支持者にとっては十分なのだろう。所詮は神義論であって、科学とは何の関係もない話しなのだから。

Laymanレベルでは聖書を論拠にするAnswers in Genesis

かつて、"若い地球の創造論者"たちは、「地球も宇宙も6000歳なのに6000光年より彼方が見えるのは、地球への経路上の光線も創造されたからだ」と主張していた：
