Bill Requires 'Critical Analysis' of Evolution

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- A requirement for public schools to teach "critical analysis" of evolution, a term used by intelligent design supporters, passed Monday in the Florida House. The issue now returns to the Senate, which already has rejected the House approach and passed a different version.

Science Dailyなどによれば、2008年4月24日にGenetic Information Nondiscrimination Act(遺伝情報差別禁止法案)が米国上院を賛成95、反対0、棄権5で通過した。

これについてGenetics and Public Policy CenterのKathy Hudsonは次のようにコメントした：

"After a very long wait, Americans can now be confident that their genetic information cannot be used by health insurers or employers in harmful or hurtful ways," says Kathy Hudson, director of the Genetics and Public Policy Center, established at Johns Hopkins University by The Pew Charitable Trusts. "Our challenge now is to make sure that doctors and patients are aware of these new protections so that fear of discrimination never again stands in the way of a decision to take a genetic test that could save a life."

2007年4月25日にHR493が下院を通過したときに、NewScientistは以下のような報道をしていたのだが：

• このICR大学院を認証したのは、宗教教育を対象とする認証機関Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schoolsである。従って、理科教育修士は非認証。
  
• このwikipedia:TRACCSの設立経緯があやしい
  
• ICR大学院を認証したとき、ICR所長のDr. Henry M. MorrisがTRACSの役員をしていた。つまり、自分で自分を認証した{Steve Levicoff]。
  
• 2007年12月時点で、ICR大学院はテキサス州に移転し、TRACSを離脱し、あらためて理科教育修士課程の認証を得ようとした[Dallas News,COPY]

確かに、普通にBGMと使用したのではなく、批判対象にしたのだというのは確かなもよう:

John Lennon's "Imagine" is played (original version) over B&W scenes of what looked like communist China, with a parade of soldiers. The lyrics to the song were subtitled on the bottom of the screen. I think I remember a shot of Stalin saluting somewhere in here as well. The part of the song played was of course "...and no religion too...", implying that no religion equals communist China. Does Yoko know about this? I doubt she'd be pleased.

共産中国らしきモノクロ画像で兵士の行進するバックで、John Lennonの"Imagine"が流れた。画面下部には歌詞が書かれていた。私の記憶では、スターリンがどこかで敬礼しているシーンでも、使われていた。"Imagine"の流された部分は「宗教は存在しない」で、無宗教は共産中国を意味している。Yoko Onoはこれを知っているだろうか。たぶんYoko Onoはこれを喜ばないだろう。

著作権をめぐる裁判についてはManhattan地裁の判断待ちになるが、ともかくもインテリジェントデザイン運動側にとって、"Imagine"は敵なようだ。

ルイジアナの反進化論州法案はまだ進行中...

National Center for Science Educationによれば、2008年3月21日に出現したルイジアナ州上院の反進化論州法案Senate Bill 561が、名称を"Louisiana Academic Freedom Act"から"Louisiana Science Education Act"に変更されて、ルイジアナ州上院教育委員会を2008年4月17日に通過した。

The Baton Rouge Advocate (April 18, 2008) reported, "Senate Education Committee Chairman Ben Nevers, sponsor of the bill, denied that his proposal was a bid to promote creationism," and quoted Nevers as saying, "This bill does not promote religion or ask to introduce religion in any classroom." Earlier, however, Nevers acknowledged to the Advocate (April 1, 2008) that he introduced the bill at the behest of the Louisiana Family Forum, a religious right group that recommends (PDF) a variety of young-earth and "intelligent design" creationist organizations, including the Institute for Creation Research, the Foundation for Thought and Ethics, and Kent Hovind's Creation Science Evangelism.

That’s the end of the quote. And when he finishes reading the quote, Ben Stein intones the guilty verdict by naming the source: Charles Darwin. Oh my, it sounds like Darwin actually did provide a rationale to the horrific practices of the Nazis.

Mind you, none of this has anything to do with whether or not Darwin’s scientific findings were correct. They were. But Ben Stein and his cronies, in their selective use of passages written by a great man merely showed themselves to be so very small.

Individual citizens may seldom be in a position to ask or demand answers for these questions on a public level, but their knowledge of the relevance and importance of answers increases the attention given to the questions by private enterprise, interest groups, and public officials. Furthermore, individuals may ask the same questions with regard to their own use of technologyfor instance, their own use of efficient household appliances, of substances that contribute to pollution, of foods and fabrics. The cumulative effect of individual decisions can have as great an impact on the large-scale use of technology as pressure on public decisions can.

Not all such questions can be answered readily. Most technological decisions have to be made on the basis of incomplete information, and political factors are likely to have as much influence as technical ones, and sometimes more. But scientists, mathematicians, and engineers have a special role in looking as far ahead and as far afield as is practical to estimate benefits, side effects, and risks. They can also assist by designing adequate detection devices and monitoring techniques, and by setting up procedures for the collection and statistical analysis of relevant data.

If ID isn’t about “God” as defined by Stein, then why does Stein believe he has impeached the honor and professionalism of scientist Richard Dawkins when Dawkins admits that he’s an atheist (as if it were a secret)?

The intellectual revolution initiated by Darwin sparked great debates. At issue scientifically was how to explain the great diversity of living organisms and of previous organisms evident in the fossil record. The earth was known to be populated with many thousands of different kinds of organisms, and there was abundant evidence that there had once existed many kinds that had become extinct. How did they all get here? Prior to Darwin's time, the prevailing view was that species did not change, that since the beginning of time all known species had been exactly as they were in the present. Perhaps, on rare occasions, an entire species might disappear owing to some catastrophe or by losing out to other species in the competition for food; but no new species could appear.

Nevertheless, in the early nineteenth century, the idea of evolution of species was starting to appear. One line of thought was that organisms would change slightly during their lifetimes in response to environmental conditions, and that those changes could be passed on to their offspring. (One view, for example, was that by stretching to reach leaves high on trees, giraffesover successive generationshad developed long necks.) Darwin offered a very different mechanism of evolution. He theorized that inherited variations among individuals within a species made some of them more likely than others to survive and have offspring, and that their offspring would inherit those advantages. (Giraffes who had inherited longer necks, therefore, would be more likely to survive and have offspring.) Over successive generations, advantageous characteristics would crowd out others, under some circumstances, and thereby give rise to new species.

Darwin presented his theory, together with a great amount of supporting evidence collected over many years, in a book entitled Origin of Species, published in the mid-nineteenth century. Its dramatic effect on biology can be traced to several factors: The argument Darwin presented was sweeping, yet clear and understandable; his line of argument was supported at every point with a wealth of biological and fossil evidence; his comparison of natural selection to the "artificial selection" used in animal breeding was persuasive; and the argument provided a unifying framework for guiding future research.

The scientists who opposed the Darwinian model did so because they disputed some of the mechanisms he proposed for natural selection, or because they believed that it was not predictive in the way Newtonian science was. By the beginning of the twentieth century, however, most biologists had accepted the basic premise that species gradually change, even though the mechanism for biological inheritance was still not altogether understood. Today the debate is no longer about whether evolution occurs but about the details of the mechanisms by which it takes place.

In the general public, there are some people who altogether reject the concept of evolutionnot on scientific grounds but on the basis of what they take to be its unacceptable implications: that human beings and other species have common ancestors and are therefore related; that humans and other organisms might have resulted from a process that lacks direction and purpose; and that human beings, like the lower animals, are engaged in a struggle for survival and reproduction. And for some people, the concept of evolution violates the biblical account of the special (and separate) creation of humans and all other species.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, the work of Austrian experimenter Gregor Mendel on inherited characteristics was rediscovered after having passed unnoticed for many years. It held that the traits an organism inherits do not result from a blending of the fluids of the parents but from the transmission of discrete particlesnow called genesfrom each parent. If organisms have a large number of such particles and some process of random sorting occurs during reproduction, then the variation of individuals within a speciesessential for Darwinian evolutionwould follow naturally.

Within a quarter of a century of the rediscovery of Mendel's work, discoveries with the microscope showed that genes are organized in strands that split and recombine in ways that furnish each egg or sperm cell with a different combination of genes. By the middle of the twentieth century, genes had been found to be part of DNA molecules, which control the manufacture of the essential materials out of which organisms are made. Study of the chemistry of DNA has brought a dramatic chemical support for biological evolution: The genetic code found in DNA is the same for almost all species of organisms, from bacteria to humans.

強制交尾は、昆虫から霊長類まで広く見られるオスの適応行動だ。人間の男性の攻撃的な性行動も、文化的に条件づけられた権力行使の歪みとしてではなく、動物一般の繁殖戦略と見なさねばなるまい。社会生物学は、そして著者はそう主張する。
　この種の言説は危険というか、性犯罪者の免罪に利用されはしないだろうか。なにしろ男のレイプ衝動は「自然な性質」だとのお墨付きを与えているのだから。
　著者は「否」と断言する。何かが「自然である」とは、「善である」という意味ではない。両者を混同する「自然主義の誤謬」から、フェミニズムなどの見当違いのイデオロギーが生ずるというのである。

「"自然に関する知識"から"倫理的価値"を導き出す」ために「自然は良い」という"価値観"(あるいは宗教)が必要。その「自然は良い」を自然科学の版図内にあると思えば、創造論者たち[ie. DeWitt, 2002]のような主張ができてしまう。

もちろん、「自然は良い」はさまざまな宗教の主張であっても、自然法則から導出できる結論ではない。キリスト教系だと神の被造物たる自然は善なるものかもしれないし、スピリチュアル系だと"自然"は信仰対象そのものかもしれない。だとすると、彼らにとっては、その自然から生み出されるものは善かもね。

したがって、これらの宗教を用いないなら、次のようになる：

• 進化によって生じたものが善かどうかは知ったこっちゃない
  
• "その形質"は一般には善とは考えられない
  
• 従って...

"Imagine"を無断使用したインテリジェントデザイン宣伝映画Expelled

インテリジェントデザイン宣伝映画Expelledでは曲の無断使用が2つあったと思われるというエントリをRichardDawkins.NetのJosh Timonenが3月25日にポストした：

Music
First off: Either Expelled has a disproportionately-large music budget (for how bad of a film it is), or they are using songs they haven't paid for in their Director's Cut private screenings (that may be changed before the official nationwide release). John Lennon's "Imagine" is played (original version) over B&W scenes of what looked like communist China, with a parade of soldiers. The lyrics to the song were subtitled on the bottom of the screen. I think I remember a shot of Stalin saluting somewhere in here as well. The part of the song played was of course "...and no religion too...", implying that no religion equals communist China. Does Yoko know about this? I doubt she'd be pleased.

The Killers' song "All These Things That I've Done" was used at the end of the film. The part of the song used was the bridge with the lyrics "I've got soul but I'm not a soldier". I'm guessing that wasn't cheap, and I'm surprised that a fairly popular band like The Killers would want their reputation tarnished by being in a Creationist film - especially since this is THE song that the film ends with, very prominently. Maybe The Killers don't know about this, and someone should tell them?

Expelled試写会Ｑ＆Ａで気に食わない質問者に...

PZ Myers準教授を追い出しても、ちっともうまくいかないインテリジェントデザイン宣伝映画Expelledの試写会。NewScientistからも試写会に参加した報告が掲載されている。これによれば、プロデューサーMark MathisはＱ＆Ａタイムでネタを提供した模様：

I shot my hand up to ask a question. "The intelligent design movement has gone to great lengths to argue that intelligent design is not religion, that it's science. And you made a whole film arguing that it is religious. How do they react to that?"

"Well," Mathis said, "I guess it makes them a little uncomfortable."

Some arguing ensued concerning the scientific merits of ID, and someone asked, "Where's the evidence? Where are the peer reviewed papers?" to which Mathis proudly proclaimed, "Actually, there are ten peer reviewed papers."

A guy in the front row scoffed. "Ten papers?" he asked sarcastically.

Mathis told the guy not to interrupt, and then mockingly called him "Mr Darwinist." Zing!

さらに、学問の自由とかなんとか主張するExpelledだが、実態は逆だと示すパフォーマンスをやってしまう：

Another man in the front row wondered about the film's premise that supporters of ID are being silenced. He pointed out that a recent trial about the teaching of intelligent design held in Dover, Pennsylvania, gave supporters of intelligent design all the time in the world to make their case, but most of the 'leading lights' of ID didn't even show up.

When Mathis was responding, the guy asked another question, and the producer shot back, "How about you let me finish talking?" Then, a security guard for the film approached the calmly seated man and told him, "I may have to ask you to leave."

"Does anyone else see how ironic this is?" the guy asked.

"Shut up!" someone shouted from the back.

前列のもう一人の男性は、インテリジェントデザイン支持者が沈黙しているという映画の前提が怪しいと指摘した。彼はペンシルバニア州Doverでのインテリジェントデザインを教えることについての裁判で、常に世界中でインテリジェントデザイン支持者たちが実例を作ろうとしているが、インテリジェントデザインの指導者たちは姿が見えなかったと指摘した。
