Discovery InstituteのたぶんCasey Luskinの定期的ポスト記事

2008年8月半ばにDiscovery Institute公式ブログに、To Teach or Not to Teach: Common Misconceptions About Intelligent Design という仰々しいタイトルで、法務担当が匿名で連続エントリをポストした。仰々しいタイトルだが、どうも中身は定期的な基本主張の繰り返し。

まずは、"God of the gaps"詭弁（科学で説明できないものは神様のせいなのさ）の形式であること記述している：

As Discovery Institute's Intelligent Design Briefing Packet for Educators states:
Discovery Instituteの教育についてのインテリジェントデザイン概要はこう主張する:

The scientific method is commonly described as a four step process involving observations, hypothesis, experiments, and conclusion. ID begins with the observation that intelligent agents produce complex and specified information (CSI). Design theorists hypothesize that if a natural object was designed, it will contain high levels of CSI. Scientists then perform experimental tests upon natural objects to determine if they contain complex and specified information. One easily testable form of CSI is irreducible complexity, which can be discovered by experimentally reverse-engineering biological structures to see if they require all of their parts to function. When ID researchers find irreducible complexity in biology, they conclude that such structures were designed.

科学的研究法は一般に観察と仮説と実験と結論の4段階として記述される。インテリジェントデザインはインテリジェントエージェントが複雑で指定された情報(CSI)を創ることを観察する。デザイン理論家は自然物がデザインされたなら、それはハイレベルのCSIを含んでいると仮説を立てる。科学者は自然物に対して実験を行って、複雑で指定された情報を含んでいるか判断する。容易に検証可能な形式のCSIは還元不可能な複雑さである。これは生物学的器官を実験的にリバースエンジニアリングして、すべての部品が機能するために必要か調べることで、発見できる。インテリジェントデザイン研究者たちは、生物学において還元不可能な複雑さを発見すると、そのような構造はデザインされたと結論する。

ちなみに、CSIの測定方法は存在しないし、計測例もない。

で、「還元不可能な複雑さ」の定義は「進化論で説明できない」らしい。つまり「進化論で説明できないものはデザインなのさ」というきれいな"God of the gaps"の形式をとる。その例は1996年頃に挙げられた鞭毛と血液凝固と免疫系などである。その後、鞭毛の分解や血液凝固系の分解や免疫系の分解が進んでいて、「進化論で説明できない」ではなく「当時は進化論で説明されていない」になっている。

そういったことはなかったことにして、匿名の法務担当は執筆している。なんとなく、このノリは弁護士でもある創造論者Casey Luskinぽい。

で、第2回はつまらなくて、第3回は「インテリジェントデザインは創造論ではない。」実際には、創造科学をパクるインテリジェントデザインという状況にあり、インテリジェントデザイン理論家Dr. Willia, Dembskiはインテリジェントデザインは創造科学の補完者だと言っているのだけどね。Common Descentな創造科学とインテリジェントデザインの証拠が見つかっており、文字通りのCreationismからIntelligent Desginへの中間形態たる"cdesign proponentsists"という例はとても有名なのだし...

By claiming ID is religion they hope that they can avoid the debate entirely. However, as noted in an article in Harvard Law Review titled "Not Your Daddy's Fundamentalism: Intelligent Design in the Classroom" reviewing Francis Beckwith's book Law, Darwinism, and Public Education: The Establishment Clause and the Challenge of Intelligent Design:

インテリジェントデザインを宗教だと言うことで、彼ら(Darwinist)は論争を完全に回避できる。しかし、Harvard Law Reviewの"Not Your Daddy's Fundamentalism: Intelligent Design in the Classroom"という記事で、Francis Beckwithの本"Law, Darwinism, and Public Education: The Establishment Clause and the Challenge of Intelligent Design"をレビューしていて:

"While lumping ID with creationism may be a good rhetorical strategy for ID's opponents, it only detracts from an independent and rigorous evaluation of the merits of ID's claims […] Perhaps the most ironic aspect of this debate is that Darwinists are even opposed to the inclusion of ID in the public school curriculum. If there is any fundamental tenet of Darwinism, is it not that competition leads inexorably to progress?" (p. 7)

「創造論とインテリジェントデザインをひとまとめにすることは、インテリジェントデザインの敵にとって良い修辞戦略かもしれないが、インテリジェントデザインの主張のメリットの独立した厳格な評価を損なうだけである。おそらく、この論争における、もっとも皮肉な面はダーウィニストが公立学校のカリキュラムにインテリジェントデザインを含むことに反対していることだ。ダーウィニズムに基本的な信条があるなら、それは容赦なき競争が進歩につながるというものではないのか？」(7ページ)

「容赦なき競争が進歩につながる」という「進化論についてのよくある誤解」になっているところも見事。
論争が進歩につながるので、論争を受け入れよというなら、こんなのを歴史の授業に加えるのも良いかもしれない：

P A MacLochlainn, a provocative Irish Gay Rights leader, argued on BBC radio, "I believe that a 33-year-old unmarried rabbi living in Israel, in the time that he was living and having a favorite friend among the apostles called John, was quite clearly a gay man."

"Irish Gay Rights"の指導者であるP A MacLochlainnはBBCラジオで次のように論じた「私は、イスラエルで生活していた33歳の独身のラビが、当時、使徒たちの中でもヨハネの呼ばれる使徒とともに生活し、気に入った友としていて、明らかにまさにゲイだったと信じてる」
