Republican incumbent Kathy Martin, Clay Center, believed that the board was helping solve problems during a candidate forum Thursday at the Eisenhower Visitors Center auditorium. Her challenger, Christopher Renner, a Manhattan Democrat, believes that some of the ideological battles has put the state board in a bad light.

He believed that science still needs to be stressed and he could support teaching creationism in the context of a social science or in a religion curriculum. Creationism should not be taught as a science standard. While he has a strong-faith based religious background that was the result of his Kansas roots, he said that public education has a role to teach science and facts.
