調査時期は1980〜1999年と幅があるのだが、高校の1/3程度の生物教師たちが、理科の授業で創造論を教えるべきだと考えているという記事。理科教育の基準をどう変えようとも、教育委員会をインテリジェントデザイン運動から守りきろうとも、現場でくずされそう。
以下の表を見てほしい。これは米国の高校の生物の教師(teachers)と教育委員(board)たちが公立学校の理科の授業で創造論を教えるべきだと信じている比率の調査結果のまとめである。出典は、Skeptical Inquirerの2001年11-12月号に掲載されたRandy Moore(University of Minnesotaの生物学の教授)の"Educational Malpractice Why Do So Many Biology Teachers Endorse Creationism?"という記事(FindArticlesのコピー)にあったデータ。調査時期は1980〜1999年までまちまちだが、おおよその傾向はわかるだろう。

愕然とする他ない。1999年の調査でも、サウスダコタ州では39%の生物教師が、ルイジアナ州では29%の生物教師が創造論を理科の授業で教えるべきだと考えているのだ。
個々に見ていっても、ひどいものだ。
In Oklahoma, 33 percent of high school biology teachers place little or no emphasis on evolution. In Kentucky, Indiana, and Tennessee, 23 percent of high school biology teachers have the same view (Weld and McNew 1999).
オクラホマ州では33%の高校生物教師はほとんど進化論をｌ強調しない。ケンタッキー州、インディアナ州、テネシー州でも23%の高校生物教師が同じ見方をしている(Weld and McNew 1999)。
In Louisiana, 24 percent of high school teachers believe that creationism is scientifically valid, and another 17 percent are not sure. Even more (29 percent) believe that creationism should be included in high school biology classes. More than one-third of the high school biology teachers in Louisiana's public schools allocate time to creationism (Moore 1999c).
ルイジアナ州では、24%の高校生物教師が創造論が科学的に有効だと答え、17%がわからないとい答えている。さらに多くの(29%)が創造論を高校の生物の授業で教えるべきだと信じている。さらにルイジアナ州の公立高校の1/3以上の生物教師が創造論に時間を割いている(Moore 1999c)。
In Minnesota, 40 percent of biology teachers spend little or no time teaching evolution (Hessler 2000).
ミネソタ州では、40%の生物教師が進化論を教えるのにほとんど時間をかけていない(Hessler 2000)。
In Pennsylvania, one-third of high school biology teachers do not believe that evolution is central to biology (Weld and McNew 1999).
ペンシルバニア州では、高校生物教師の1/3が、進化論が生物学にとって重要と考えていない(Weld and McNew 1999)。
In Indiana, 33 percent of high school biology teachers reject or are undecided about whether evolution is a scientifically valid explanation of the state of living organisms of the past and present (Rutledge and Mitchell 2002).
インディアナ州では、33%の高校生物教師が、過去と現在の生物の状態について進化論が科学的に有効な説明でないと拒絶するか、決めかねている(Rutledge and Mitchell 2002)。

教育委員会レベルで進化論教育を守れても、現場がこれではきびしい。せめてもの救いは、創造論サイドにつく生物教師が1/3程度と少数派だということだろうか。
そして、この高校教師たちは創造論者であることを誇りに思っているという調査がある(Harp 1999, Scanlon and Uy 1999, Wolfson 1999a, b; see Moore 1999a)。それによるとこんなことを言っている：
"[I don't want] want anything to do with the word evolution."
私は進化という言葉と関わりたくない。
"I don't use the word evolution [because I'm] a Christian ... so I don't think I evolved."
私は進化と言う言葉を使わない。(何故なら私は）キリスト教徒だからだ。だから私は自分が進化してきたとは考えない。
"[I'm a creationist and] don't think God needed evolution to create his world."
（私は創造論者であり）神が世界の創造に進化を必要としたとは考えない。
"A lot of biology teachers don't touch evolution."
多くの生物教師は進化論に触れない。
"We believe the Heavenly Father has created all things ... We just try to teach the truth."
我々は天なる父がすべてを創造したと信じている。我々は真理を教えようとしている。
これでは、創造論を理科で教えようという動きは消えそうにない。こういっている教師たちがどうしようもないダメ教師なら問題は大きくないかもしれない。しかし、カンザス州ガレーナ高校のスタン・カーター先生(Joplin Globeの2005年2月12日の記事,エントリ)のような、おそらくいい先生だと感じさせる人がインテリジェントデザインを支持していたりする。
Randy Moore教授もどうすればよいか答えは持っていない。
放置してよい話ではないが、私にも答えはない。
