ひとつめのQuote Miningはこれ：

Darwin himself would not have supported censorship of the scientific weaknesses of his own theory. Indeed he wrote a whole chapter in his book, On the Origin of Species, about the difficulties with his theory. Darwin said, "If it could be demonstrated that any complex organ existed, which could not possibly have been formed by numerous, successive, slight modifications, my theory would absolutely break down."

"Van Valen's theory [the Red Queen hypothesis] is that the environment is constantly decaying with respect to existing organism, so that natural selection operates essentially to enable the organisms to maintain their state of adaptation rather than to improve it. Evidence from the Red Queen hypothesis comes from an examination of extinction rates in a large number of evolutionary lines. If natural selection were actually improving the fit of organisms to their environments, then we might expect the probability that a species will become extinct in the next time period to be less for species that have already been in existence for a long time, since the long-lived species are presumably the ones that have been improved by natural selection. The data show, however, that the probability of extinction of a species appears to be a constant, characteristic of the group to which it belongs but independent of whether that species has been in existence for a long time or a short one. Van Valenの理論（赤の女王仮説）とは、既存の生物にとって環境は常に悪化していくため、自然選択は本質的に生物の適応状態を改善していくのではなく維持していくように働く。多くの進化の過程における絶滅率の調査から赤の女王仮説を支持する証拠が得られている。もし自然選択が生物の環境に対する適応度を上げるのであれば、長く存在してきた種は自然選択によって改善されており、長く存在してきた種が絶滅する確率は低下するはずである。しかし、長く存在してきたか否かとは関係なく、その生物種が属する分類群において、種の絶滅確率は一定であることをデータは示している。言い換えるなら、長く存在してきた種に対する自然選択は、生存確率を高めることはなく、常に変化していく環境に追従することを可能とするだけである。何らかの物理原則に基づいてアプリオリにニッチを記述できない限り、そのような進化的適応を説明し予測する方法はない。

Don McLeroyテキサス州教育委員長は緑字だけを引用して、「種は変化しない」という"古い地球の創造論"の論拠にしようとしたようだ。

Lewontinの記述内容を理解した上でMiningしたのか、テキストサーチだけで拾ったのか定かではない。ただ、Don McLeroyテキサス州教育委員長は、お気に入りの進化生物学者はRichard Dawkinsで、進化生物学の本を広く読んでいるので、わかった上で作為的引用をしたと思われる。
