machida77 大衆の目に触れる彫刻では12世紀初から淫蕩の罪を描写した作品が広まった、と澁澤龍彦は書いていますが(『悪魔の中世』より。彫刻より後の絵画の例にBoschやGiottoも紹介されている)、その辺との関連が気になります。

12世紀初から大衆の目にふれるところにも容易に造形的表現を見出していた地獄の刑罰のひとつがある。「淫蕩の刑罰」だ。モワサック、トゥールーズの聖セルナン、シャルリュー、ボルドーの聖アンドレなどの正面扉口に、わたしたちはロマネスク彫刻が石の上に残した、当時の宗教の残酷とエロティシズムの生々しい記録を読み取ることができる。

主題はどこでも同じで、淫蕩な女が爬虫類に恥部を食い荒らされている場面である。モワサックでは、左右の乳房にそれぞれ大蛇が噛みつき、陰部にはガマガエルが食いついている。左側の悪魔は爬虫類をけしかけているのであろう。

絵画の領域ではこのような主題は比較的少ないが、それでもタヴァンの地下祭室の有名な壁画（12世紀末）をあげねばなるまい。髪をふり乱し、淫蕩の乳房を蛇もろとも、みずから槍で突き刺した女は、フォッシヨンによれば「倒れる寸前、断末魔の痙攣にふるえているかのよう」である。このように、女を悪魔の同類と見た聖職者の抑圧されたサディズムが、素朴ながら時に堪えがたい陰惨なリアリズムとなって、中世修道院のラングドック芸術にあふれ出た過程は、むしろ精神分析の好材料になるだろう。

LHS Bottom - LUXURIA (Lust) - Women as lewd and lustful sinners - serpents punishingly drain the breasts whilst another hungry mouth appears at the crotch and the the devil spits out a toad and grips his body-slashing knife meaningfully. At least he's kept his schlong under wraps, unless that's not really a tail ......

On the other hand, the woman opposite presents simultaneously two vices.

She looks like tousled and neglected. Her clothe is not correctly held and reveals a bare breast attacked by two snakes. This iconographic detail has been known since antiquity and became in the Middle-Ages the symbol of lust. Moreover, all the authors noticed the women piercing her breast with a spear, but until now, this gesture was not related to the inscription “IRA”. This suicide is linked to anger, considered as an expression of despair.
