Ratliff, the son of former Texas Lt. Gov. Bill Ratliff, is among a group of GOP challengers viewed as less partisan on culture-war issues than their incumbent opponents.

なおBalack Obamaに敗れた共和党John McCain連邦上院議員なども、宗教右翼とは対立する立場にある。また、Jon Huntsman Jr元ユタ州知事は在職中に、反進化論集法案が可決された場合に拒否権発動すると可能性をちらつかせている（その後に州下院で否決）。多くの州で提案された反進化論州法案が放置モードで廃案になるのも、共和党有力議員がそんなものを相手にしてないため。
