実はもっと死んでいるかも

豪州などにはCoroner System(検視(死)官制度)があって、不審な死に関して、Coroner's Court(検視(死)法廷)で、Inquest(審理/調査)がなされ、Coroner's Finding(検視(死)官判断/判決)が出される。場合によっては、再発を抑止するために、医療行政などへの提言も出される。

これまで取り上げてきた、ホメオパスFrancine Scrayenを信じて、通常医療を拒否して死に至ったPenelope Dingleの件は、このCoroner's CourtでのInquestについてである。概略を復習しておくと...、

Perth's Penelope Dingle, the wife of prominent Perth environmental and nutritional toxicologist Peter Dingle, agreed to be treated with alternative therapies and refused to have surgery to remove the cancer soon after she was diagnosed in 2003. Instead, she adhered to a strict diet and regular homeopath treatments before becoming so unwell she had to have emergency surgery to remove a bowel obstruction. By this stage, the cancer had spread and two years later, in 2005, Dingle died from complications of the cancer.

豪州Perthの著名な環境・食料毒物治療者Peter Dingleの妻であるPerth在住のPenelope Dingleは、2003年に癌である診断されたとき、代替医療で治療することに同意し、癌除去の手術を拒否した。その代わりに、彼女は、症状が悪化して腸閉塞の緊急手術を受ける直前まで、厳格な食餌療法とホメオパシー治療を行っていた。この段階では、癌は転移していて、2年後の2005年遅くには、癌の合併症で死亡した。[The Australian 2010/06/10]

Delivering his findings on Friday, West Australian Coroner Alastair Hope said homeopath Francine Scrayen "was not a competent health professional" and had given "dangerous advice" to Mrs Dingle when treating her. He also said Mrs Dingle's husband Peter, a prominent toxicologist, was "a victim of his own misinformation" and had "no qualifications in health and wellness".

西オーストラリア検死官Alastair Hopeは、金曜日に判断を言い渡すにあたり、「ホメオパスFrancine Scrayenは正統な医療専門家ではなく、Penelope Dingleを治療中に危険な助言をした。また、著名な毒物学者で、Penelopeの夫であるPeter Dingleは、自身が自らの誤った情報の犠牲者であり、医療資格を持っていない」と述べた。[Sydney Morning Herald 2010/07/30]

で、このPenelope Dingle死亡に関するInquestが行われたのは、Penelope Dingleの姉妹によるCoroner's CourtへのInquestの要請がなされたため：

Penelope Dingle died of bowel cancer in 2005.

In 2007, her family approached the coroner's court to investigate her death.

The inquest has been told Mrs Dingle was being treated by a homeopath when she developed symptoms from bowel cancer.

Penelope Dingleは2005年に腸癌で死亡した。2007年に彼女の家族（姉妹）がCoroner's Courtに彼女の死についての調査を求めた。Inquestで、Penelope Dingleは腸癌の症状が悪化している時、ホメオパスによって治療されていたとの証言があった。

腸閉塞を浣腸で治そうとするなど常軌を逸していたこともあり、事件（およびInquestの過程）は豪州で広く報道されることになった。

しかし、もし、Penelope Dingleの姉妹たちがCoroner's Courtの本件を持ちこまなければ、調査されることも報道されることもなく、終わっていたと思われる。そして、ホメオパスFrancine Scrayenは今日も正常運転を続けていたことだろう。

それは、ひとつのいやな仮説を思いつかせる。世の中には、癌をホメオパシーで治療できるという主張が満ち溢れており[Google homeopathy treatment cancer]、その主張を信じて通常医療を受けることを拒否して、死んでいった人々が、実はもっと多くいるのではないかと。
