The era of modern malariology began with the detection of the malaria host-vectorparasite triangle in the late 19th century. At the time, the most accepted theory of both allopaths and homeopaths was the understanding of malaria as a non-contagious, non-infectious miasmatic illness (Allen, 1995).なので、Samuel Hahnemannは、それに基づいてホメオパシーを創り出した。
近代マラリア学の時代は、マラリアの宿主・寄生虫の三角関係が19世紀終わりに明らかになったことに始まる。当時のアロパス[通常医]とホメオパスともに最も受け入れられていた理論は、マラリアが接触伝染や感染しない病気だというものだった。

Hahnemann evolved the theory that perhaps quinine cured malaria because it would produce symptoms like those of malaria if given to a healthy man. He tried it on himself and it did. With this idea fixed in his mind, he returned to the practice of medicine in 1796, and his remarkable hypothesis became the basis of the system called homeopathy, expressed in the phrase similia similibus curantur, "like cures like."しかし、Hahnemannがホメオパシーの基礎を作ってから、84年後のこと、Charles Louis Alphonse Laveranは、1880年にマラリアの原因であるマラリア原虫を発見し、1907年にノーベル賞を受賞した。そして、キニーネはマラリア原虫に特異的に毒性を示していることで抗マラリア薬として機能していることがわかった。
Hahnemannは、健康な状態の人に投与するとマラ理のような症状を起こすので、キニーネはマラリアを治療できるのだという理論を進化させた。彼は自分自身で試した。この考えが彼の脳内で固まると、彼は1796年に医療現場にもどった。彼の注目すべき仮説は、似たものが似たものを治癒するという「similia similibus curantur」という言葉で表現される、ホメオパシーと呼ばれる体系の基礎となった。

つまり「マラリアとキニーネの関係が"similia similibus curantur"ではない」ことが明かになってしまった。それで、ホメオパシーは崩壊あるいは方向転換したかというと、そういう形跡はない。Samuel Hahnemannが亡くなって、37年が経過していて、もはや方向転換しようがなかったのだろう。
これより少し前の1865年に、Johann Josef Loschmidtによって、アボガドロ定数が測定され、ホメオパシーレメディには原物質が1分子も残っていないことが明らかになっている。Hahnemann死亡後、ほんの22年後のことだったが、このときも希釈に限界を設定するといったことはなく、「原物質を希釈したものではなく、原物質を全部捨てた後のもの」がレメディだという状況を変えることはなかった。もはや、マラリア原虫ごときで、ゆらぐようなホメオパシーではなくなっていたのかも。
