However, the health board defended the plans, which is understood to have been prompted both by financial pressures across NHS Lothian and, crucially, a recommendation earlier this year from the British Medical Association stating homeopathy had no proven clinical benefit.
The move mirrors similar strategies across Scotland, although a similar centre in Tayside was given a four-year reprieve.
It also means that patients seeking homeopathy - a complimentary therapy which works on the principle of "like cures like" by diluting substances through water into tiny doses - will have to travel to Glasgow.
Health chiefs emphasised that no final decision had yet been taken, but sources confirmed closure to be the likely outcome.
The centre in Dalkeith is the only one in the Lothians that offers "state" homeopathy, though GPs could refer to private clinics in the city.
