子供たちを進化論からOpt-Outさせる動き

昨年(2009/05)、カナダのアルバータ州で、学校教育で進化論から"opt-out"することを可能にするかもしれない州法案論争があった。

A controversial new bill does not give Alberta parents the right to pull their children out of science classes when evolution is discussed, according to Lindsay Blackett, the provincial minister responsible for human rights.

論争となっている新たな州法案は、人権を担当するLindsay Blackett地域相によれば、進化論を扱う理科の授業に子供を出席させない権利をアルバータ州の親たいに与えない。

New rules buried in a proposed amendment to Alberta's human rights legislation that extends rights to homosexuals would require schools to notify parents in advance of "subject matter that deals explicitly with religion, sexuality or sexual orientation." Parents can then ask for their child to be excluded from the discussion.

アルバータ人権法の修正案に盛り込まれた、ホメセクシュアルに対する権利の拡大を定めた新規定は、学校側に対して「宗教・性・性的方向性を直接扱う主題」を教育する前に両親に通知」することを義務付けている。両親は自分の子供たちを、その授業に欠席させてもよい。

Premier Ed Stelmach told reporters last week that the provision could be used to pull students out of classes dealing with evolution, if parents preferred their kids be taught what's in the Bible instead.

"The parents would have the opportunity to make that choice," he said.

Ed Stelmach州知事は先週、レポーターたちに「代りに聖書に改訂あることを子供に教えたい両親は、子供を進化論を取り扱う授業を欠席させることにも使える。両親にはその選択の機会ができることになる」と述べていた。

But in an interview with CBC News Monday, Blackett said he has gone through the draft bill and talked to staff in the education and justice departments and concluded that religious beliefs aren't covered.

"This is opt-out on religious instruction not on grounds of religious beliefs. "Evolution is not a part of religious studies, it's part of science curriculum, and there is nothing that will change that going forward."

似たような事例は米国に多くある。たとえば、2009年1月に提案され、2月に州上院教育委員会で否決されて廃案になったオクラホマ州上院に反進化論州法案SB320などにも、"Opt-Out"を目指した文言がある：

Students may be evaluated based upon their understanding of course materials, but no student in any public school or institution shall be penalized in any way because the student may subscribe to a particular position on scientific theories.

このような、創造論者たちによる進化論Opt-Outの動きを取り上げたRobert T. Pennockは、彼らの動機を次のように述べている：

There are a variety of reasons why creationists want to be able to have their children opt out of evolution. One basic reason seems simple, at least at first glance. They see evolution as contradicting their understanding of the story of creation as it is told in their sacred text, and they want to teach that religious account instead. This is true, as far as it goes, but in fact, their objections to evolution go far beyond a dispute about the facts of biological origins. As I have explained in detail elsewhere, at stake for most creationists is morality itself and the possibility of meaning and purpose to life (Pennock 1999). But they don’t stop with evolution; most creationists also reject key findings in geology, astronomy, anthropology, and many other sciences as well. Even more radically, the new creationists also reject essential elements of scientific methodology, which they claim to be a naturalistic metaphysical dogma. Instead of natural science, they propose a theistic science that is based in their understanding of Biblical truth. As Intelligent Design Creationist William Dembski puts it, “any view of the sciences that leaves Christ out of the picture must be seen as fundamentally deficient.” (Dembski 1999, p. 206)

したがって、創造論者たちは進化論に限らず、科学全体からOpt-Outすることを求めると、Robert T. Pennockは結論する。

公立学校でそれが実現できていないので、創造論を信じる親たちの中には「公立学校から子どもを取り出す」動きもある。
