1998年にDembskiは言った：
The Intelligent Design movement begins with the work of Charles Thaxton, Walter Bradley, Michael Denton, Dean Kenyon, and Phillip Johnson. と古来よりの反進化論屋Michael Dentonを仲間にしたり、超自然(神)もありにしろと言ったりしているが、ここで重要なのは一点。ポジティブな研究プログラムを提案していることだ。
さて、その後どうなったかというと、Richard B. Hoppe [2004]によれば、インテリジェントデザインの議論ボードなサイトで2002年にDembskiは次のように言った：
Why should ID supporters allow the Darwinian establishment to indoctrinate students at the high school level, only to divert some of the brightest to becoming supporters of a mechanistic account of evolution, when by presenting ID at the high school level some of these same students would go on to careers trying to develop ID as a positive research program? If ID is going to succeed as a research program, it will need workers, and these are best recruited at a young age. The Darwinists undestand (sic) this. So do the ID proponents. There is a sociological dimension to science and to the prospering of scientific theories, and this cannot be ignored if ID is going to become a thriving research program. (bolding and italics added)
ダーウィン学派が高校レベルの最優秀な生徒たちの一部が進化の機械論的説明の支援者となるようにしているのを黙ってみていなければならないのか。高校レベルでインテリジェントデザインを提示すれば、その同じ生徒たちの一部は、肯定的研究プログラムとしてのインテリジェントデザインを発展させる仕事につくかもしれないのに。インテリジェントデザインが研究プログラムとして成功するには、研究者が必要であり、そのためには若い人材の獲得が最善である。ダーウィニストはこれをわかっている。そしてインテリジェントデザイン支持もわかっている。科学と科学理論の隆盛には社会的な面があり、インテリジェントデザインが隆盛な研究プログラムとなるにはこれを無視できない。

どうも提案しているだけで終わったらしい。2002年時点でも高校レベルでのリクルーティングをしないと研究プログラムができないらしい。
したがって、成果もない

もちろん、統一教会信者のJonathan Wellsも3流学術誌に1本書いただけ。しかも普通の論文にこそっと「this hypothesis assumes that they are holistically designed to be turbines」を紛れ込ませただけ
"超自然もあり"にしても前に進まないインテリジェントデザイン
Lenny Flank [2006]によれば、科学の手順を踏んでいくとインテリジェントデザインは、"超自然もあり"にしても、やっぱい途中で止まる。
1. Observe some aspect of the universe.

OK, so we observe that humans and chimps share unique genetic markers, including a broken vitamin C gene and, in humans, a fused chromosome that is identical to two of the chimp chromosomes (with all the appropriate doubled centromeres and telomeres)
オーケー、では、壊れているビタミンCゲノムや、チンパンジーの染色体の2つと同定されるヒトの融合した染色体（適切に2倍になったセントロメアとテロメアのすべて）を含むヒトとチンパンジーが特定のゲノムマーカーを共有していることが観察できる。
2. Invent a tentative description, called a hypothesis, that is consistent with what you have observed.
観察したものと整合する、仮説と呼ばれる一時的な説明を作る。
OK, the proposed ID hypothesis is "an intelligent designer used a common design to produce both chimps and humans, and that common design included placing the signs of a fused chromosome and a broken vitamin C gene in both products."

さて、ここでインテリジェントデザインの超自然的方法論が輝くチャンスだ。インテリジェントデザイン仮説からどんな予測が作れるだろうか？ インテリジェントデザイナーがヒトとチンパンジーに共通デザインを使ったとしたら、何を見ることになると予期できるだろうか....

ここから先に進めないのがインテリジェントデザイン。あくまでも、Dembskiの高らかに掲げる"God of the gaps"たる説明フィルタ「自然法則でも偶然でも説明できなくて意味ありげなものはデザインだ」に従う限り、検証可能な予測は作れない。
作れる予測はただひとつで、「自然法則でも偶然でも説明できなくて意味ありげなものが自然界に見つかる」である。しかし、それはデザインを検証できない。何故なら、その隙間に入れるのは"デザイン"だけではないからだ。
たとえば、「自然法則でも偶然でも説明できなくて意味ありげなものは異星人の投棄したゴミだ」という主張も同じく「自然法則でも偶然でも説明できなくて意味ありげなものが自然界に見つかる」という予測を立てるからだ。予測があたっても、デザインであることは証明できない。しかも、この予測は、誰かが隙間を埋めてしまうと、ハズレになる。
成果がないから、教えるものもない
2003年2月のDiscovery InstituteのシニアフェローであるPaul NelsonのDartmouthの発言：
However, responding to a question after the lecture, Nelson said that he opposed the teaching of intelligent design in public schools.
"It isn't a fully-fledged theory -- there isn't yet enough there to actually teach," Nelson said.
しかし、講義の後の質問に対する答えで、Nelsonは公立学校のインテリジェントデザインを教えることに反対だと言った：
それは成熟した理論ではなく、まだ実際に教えるため十分なものがない」

この状況は2006年になっても解決していない。2006年2月のインテリジェントデザイン主唱者Phillip Johnsonの発言を報じる記事:

The hypothesis of intelligent design, while being developed, is not complete enough to be taught in the classroom, Phillip Johnson, professor emeritus of law at the University of California at Berkeley, said during a lecture at Knox College Friday.
