「人類要因の地球温暖化」について民主党支持者と共和党支持者の差が大きいことは以前より知られていた。最近、話題になっているのが、民主党支持者では地球温暖化について知識がある人の方が知識がない人より「人類要因で地球が温暖化している」と考えるのに対して、共和党支持者では逆の傾向になっていることを、ここでも確認している。

Low: 地球温暖化について理解がmoderate or great dealと回答した人

知識の多寡による回答傾向が民主党支持者と共和党支持者で逆転するのは、どんな知識も、予め決めている結論を補強する方向に解釈・利用されるためと考えられている。いわゆるMotivated Reasoning(動機づけられた推論)である。

温暖化否定論の背景には、温暖化論を「人間の価値を貶めるもの」あるいは「自由と権利を制約するもの」とみなす保守思想、「創世記に反するもの」とみなす福音主義キリスト教があり、進化論とともに温暖化論を撃滅すべきものとしている。
