共和党John McCain上院議員はIDを教えることについて、ふらふらしているらしい

インテリジェントデザインの本山たるDiscovery Instituteのニュースリリース「U.S.Senator John McCain in Seattle, WA February 23, 2007 」によれば：（via [Think Progress: McCain To Deliver Keynote Speech For Creationists]）、来る2007年2月23日に共和党上院議員John McCainが、Discovery Instituteが共催するluncheonで講演する。

Think Progressによれば、このJohn McCain上院議員はインテリジェントデザインを学校で教えることについて、ふらふらしている。Arizona Daily Starの2005年8月28日付のインタビュー記事「Transcript of John McCain's roundtable discussion with Star editors」によれば：

Daily Star: Should intelligent design be taught in schools?

McCain: I think that there has to be all points of view presented. But they've got to be thoroughly presented. So to say that you can only teach one line of thinking I don't think is - or one belief on how people and the world was created - I think there's nothing wrong with teaching different schools of thought.

Daily Star: Does it belong in science?

McCain: There's enough scientists that believe it does. I'm not a scientist. This is something that I think all points of view should be presented.

3. Should public schools require the teaching of intelligent design?
公立学校でインテリジェントデザイン教育を義務付けるべきか？

No. Instead of mandating intelligent design, Discovery Institute recommends that states and school districts focus on teaching students more about evolutionary theory, including telling them about some of the theory's problems that have been discussed in peer-reviewed science journals. In other words, evolution should be taught as a scientific theory that is open to critical scrutiny, not as a sacred dogma that can't be questioned. We believe this is a common-sense approach that will benefit students, teachers, and parents.

いいえ。インテリジェントデザインを義務付けるのではなく、Discovery instituteは州および学区に対して、進化論について査読つき論文で論じられている問題点を含めて教えることを推奨している。言い換えるなら、進化論は、疑問を呈することを許さない教義としてではなく、批判に扉を開いた科学理論として教えられるべきである。我々はこのようなコモンセンスなアプローチが生徒・先生・両親にとって有益であると信じている。

4. Is teaching about intelligent design unconstitutional?

Although Discovery Institute does not advocate requiring the teaching of intelligent design in public schools, it does believe there is nothing unconstitutional about discussing the scientific theory of design in the classroom. In addition, the Institute opposes efforts to persecute individual teachers who may wish to discuss the scientific debate over design in a pedagogically appropriate manner.

Discovery Instituteはインテリジェントデザインを公立学校で教えることを主唱しないが、授業でデザインについての科学理論を論じることは違憲とは考えない。さらに、適切な形でデザインいついての科学的論争を論じたい個々の教師を差別することに反対する。
