教皇の新刊本についてのPanda's Thumb方面の反応

一昨日の教皇の新刊本の続きで、進化論サイドに立つ人々の反応から...

Panda's ThumbではWesley R. Elsberryが2007年4月11日付のエントリ「Pope Benedict, Theistic Evolutionist」で、Reutersの配信記事を基にして、ローマカトリックの方針に変化がないことを淡々と記載している：

would the Pope, leader of the Catholic church, throw in with them, joining them in the “intelligent design” big tent? The answer, at least according to this news report, is “No”. Pope Benedict is reported to adopt theistic evolution, the idea that God’s method of creation is what science has discovered concerning evolutionary biology. And we know from William Dembski that “intelligent design theorists” are no friends of theistic evolution.

ローマカトリックの指導者たる教皇は、インテリジェントデザインのビッグテントに参加するのだろうか？その答えは報道を見る限り、ノーである。報道によれば、教皇ベネディクトは、かみがの創造の方法は科学が進化生物学で発見したものだという有神論的進化論を受け入れている。そして、William Demsbkiによればインテリジェントデザインは有神論的進化論とお友達ではない。

同じPanda's Thumbの執筆者でも、PZ Myers准教授は、Associated Pressの記事を基に、2007年4月12日付のエントリ「The Pope is not our friend: he is the friend of irrationalism, dogma, and superstition, so treat him appropriately」で、教皇がインテリジェントデザインを否定するからといって、科学の側に立つわけではなく、非合理と教義と迷信のお友達だと批判した：

Here is a criticism of evolutionary biology:

…it is also true that the theory of evolution is not a complete, scientifically proven theory … We cannot haul 10,000 generations into the laboratory.

If a Bill Dembski or a Michael Egnor or a Ken Ham had said this — and it is exactly the kind of thing they would say — we'd be throwing rotten fruit at them and mocking their ignorance of how science works.

The question is not to either make a decision for a creationism that fundamentally excludes science, or for an evolutionary theory that covers over its own gaps and does not want to see the questions that reach beyond the methodological possibilities of natural science.

Of course our understanding of the world has gaps; science is a successful strategy for closing them, not a complete description of the state of the cosmos. It's a pointless platitude to whine that there are possibilities beyond methodological naturalism when you can't provide any.

It doesn't matter whether it is in defense of Intelligent Design creationism or Catholicism — those are philosophies that have failed to provide any insight into the machineries of the universe, and it's contemptible and pathetic for advocates of supernaturalism to only look at the triumph of scientific thought to find the questions we're still asking, and treat that as a weakness.

Associated Pressの記事だけ見ると、このPZ Myers准教授の主張は正しいように見える。しかし、Reutersの配信記事には、"God of the gaps"論を否定する記述がある：

He also denied using a "God-of-the-gaps" argument that sees divine intervention whenever science cannot explain something.
"It's not as if I wanted to stuff the dear God into these gaps - he is too great to fit into such gaps," he said

同じくAssociated Pressの記事を参照しているNational Center for Science Educationのニュースリリースが伝えるEugenie Scott代表の意見では:

NCSE's executive director Eugenie C. Scott commented, "The Pope giveth and the Pope taketh away." It was gratifying, she explained, that there were no signs of the Pope's embracing creationism in any form, and that he expressed such a high view of science. "But it is disquieting," she added, "that his reported comments manifest a misunderstanding of the scientific status of evolution. No scientific theory is 'complete' and 'scientifically proven', but scientists accept theories when the evidence is strong enough -- and the evidence for evolution is overwhelming."

Similarly, Scott said that the Pope's reported criticism of evolution as not being replicable reflected a common misunderstanding of the nature of science: "Science is not limited just to the laboratory. Biology, like astronomy and geology, is largely a historical science, but it is no less a science for that." (She added, mischievously, that microbiologists like Richard Lenski would be surprised to hear that 10,000 generations can't be hauled into the laboratory.) Scott emphasized that her reaction was based on reports from the press, and that she looked forward to reading the Pope's contribution to Schoepfung und Evolution to understand his view more completely.

さすがに、理科教育をめぐる戦闘の最前線に立つEugenie C. Scottの適切なコメントというところだろうか。


一方、Reutersの配信記事を参照した、カンザスのRed State Rabbleは、教皇が有神論的進化論のポジションを維持し、インテリジェントデザインを受け入れなかったことをa href="http://redstaterabble.blogspot.com/2007/04/pope-benedict-god-created-life-through.html">歓迎している。

ということで、かなりトーンの違うReutersの配信記事とAssociated Pressの記事のどっちを見たかで反応が違っているもよう。
