AIDS再評価運動というニセ科学

米国方面に「HIV(ヒト免疫不全ウイルス)はAIDS(後天性免疫不全症候群)の原因ではない」と主張するAIDS reappraisal movement(AIDS再評価運動)あるいはAIDS dissident movement(AIDS反体制運動)あるいはAIDS denialism (AIDS否定主義)と呼ばれるニセ科学がある[wikipedia: AID reappraisal]。他の医学系のニセ科学と同じく、このAIDS再評価運動も、「本来受けるべき治療を忌避することで死なずに済んだかもしれない人が死にいたる」という被害を出している。

2年前に起きた、そのような悲劇のひとつを、Dr.Tara C. Smithが取り上げている。

This is Eliza Jane Scovill. She was the child of wealthy parents, living a good life in California. Eliza died this past spring at the age of 3 from AIDS-related pneumonia.

You may wonder how in the world this can happen in America. Don't we have tests for HIV? Don't our doctors recommend treatment to keep pregnant mothers from passing the virus onto their children? Don't they discourage breast-feeding in order to further lower the risk of transmission?

このような悲劇が米国で起きたことは疑問に思えるかもしれません。HIV検査を受けなかったのでしょうか？　医者たちは妊娠した母親から子供への感染を防ぐ処置を勧めなかったのでしょうか？　さらに感染のリスクを下げるために、母乳養育を避けるように勧めなかったのでしょうか？

Indeed, they do. But Eliza's mother is Christine Maggiore, author of What if everything you thought you knew about AIDS was wrong? She is an HIV denier, following the lead of Peter Duesberg and Phillip Johnson. She put her child in grave danger based on her "so-called AIDS," as she calls it, and now that child is dead. And worse, she's influencing other mothers to do the exact same thing she did.

"Would I redo anything based on what happened? I don't think I would. I think I acted with the best information and the best of intentions with all my heart," she said in an interview published yesterday.

The newspaper reported that the Los Angeles police were investigating the couple for endangering their daughter's life, and the local social services were considering whether the couple should be forced to test their eight-year-old son, Charlie.

Ms Maggiore was diagnosed with HIV in 1992, but has not shown symptoms of Aids. She began to question the scientific link between the virus and the disease, and wrote a book entitled What If Everything You Thought You Knew About Aids Was Wrong? The book made her a minor celebrity.

She launched an organisation, Alive and Well Aids Alternatives, to promote her ideas, met the South African president, Thabo Mbeki, who is also a sceptic, and appeared on primetime television talkshows.

She told ABC News that she refused to take antiviral drugs despite substantial evidence that they dramatically reduced the risk of the mother transferring the virus to her child because "I did not want to expose my growing child to toxins during pregnancy".

Christine Maggioreは、妊娠中にお腹の中の子供を毒素にさらしたくなかったので、母子感染のリスクを激減させること相当な証拠がある抗ウイルス薬を服用することを拒否したと、ABC Newsに話した。

Jay Gordon, a Santa Monica paediatrician who treated Eliza Jane, said he regretted not testing for HIV when he examined her for an apparent ear infection 11 days before her death.
"It's possible that the whole situation could have been changed if one of the doctors involved - one of the three doctors involved - had intervened," Dr Gordon, told the LA Times. "Do I think I'm blameless in this? No, I'm not blameless."

報道によれば、医学系のニセ科学がもたらす典型的な悲劇へのルートをたどっている。

Christine Maggioreの本"What if everything you thought you knew about AIDS was wrong?"は今もAmazonなどで販売されている。ただ、Amazonのページには次のような読者コメントがついている。

The truth is that Christina's daughter died of AIDS-related causes when she refused to have her tested for HIV. It's sad that her theories about HIV lead to the death of an innocent child.

But Christina lives in such a dreamworld that even when the L.A. coroner declared that here daughter died of AIDS-related PCP, she thought the coroner was in on some sort of conspiracy. Paranoid and crazy she is. Read her book at your own risk.

インテリジェントデザイン支持者の一部がなぜかAIDS再評価運動加わっている

AIDS再評価運動というニセ科学を掲げるサイトのひとつにVirus Myth.Netがある。ここには、インテリジェントデザインの父たるPhillip E. Johnsonのページがあり、HIVはAIDSの原因ではないと主張する記事が5本、収録されている。他に、統一教会信者でインテリジェントデザイン理論家であるJonathan Wellsも、この運動に加わっている。

ただし、インテリジェントデザイン運動の教義として「HIVはAIDSの原因ではない」と主張しているわけではない。また、インテリジェントデザイン運動の主要メンバーであるDr. William DebskiやDr. Michael BeheやDr. Stephen Meyerなども「HIVはAIDSの原因ではない」という主張をしていない。

Dr.Tara C. Smithによると、Dembskiと仲間たちのブログUncommon Descentの執筆者のうちDaveScotとCordovaは、このAIDS再評価運動を支持している。

Now, it's been frequently mentioned on here that prominent IDers Phillip Johnson and Jon Wells have previously stated their "skepticism" of HIV as the cause of AIDS. To their credit, most IDers I know disagree with Johnson and Wells on this point. However, Scot and Cordova buy right into it. Scot:

That said it's not wholly unlikely that HIV is a symptom rather than a cause of AIDS. From my POV 23 years of considering it the cause of AIDS has not moved us any closer to a vaccine. There are two possibilities in that. The first is that the virus is just too insidious but second is that it isn't insidious it's just not the cause so no amount of effort against the virus will prevent the disease. However it does seem incredibly unlikely that AIDS isn't a transmissable disease caused by infectious element of some sort so if not HIV then what is it? The evidence is circumstantial and compelling but the lack of progress in curing AIDS is also compelling evidence that we're on the wrong track.

Incredibly likely? Because we have no vaccine? That means that more than 99% of all infectious diseases, then, aren't infectious.

意味不明の論理を振りまわすDaveScotだが...

アンチ温暖化だと、反進化論とは聖書創世記つながり。しかし、「HIVはAIDSの原因ではない」はいったい、どういうつながりなのやら。DembskiやBeheやMeyerも関与していなようなので、たまたまPhillip JohnsonとJonathan WellsとDaveScotが絡んでいるだけのようではあるのだが。

あるいは敵（従来生物学全般）の敵（医学系ニセ科学）は味方と思っているのか？
