テンプルトン財団は反IDのポジションを明示する

John Templeton Foundationは2008年のTempleton Prizeをポーランドの宇宙論研究者でカトリック聖職者であるMichael (Michał) Hellerに授与した[via NCSE]。

授与についての声明で、Michael Heller教授はインテリジェントデザインを斬っている：

Adherents of the so-called intelligent design ideology commit a grave theological error. They claim that scientific theories, that ascribe the great role to chance and random events in the evolutionary processes, should be replaced, or supplemented, by theories acknowledging the thread of intelligent design in the universe. Such views are theologically erroneous. They implicitly revive the old manicheistic error postulating the existence of two forces acting against each other: God and an inert matter; in this case, chance and intelligent design. There is no opposition here. Within the all-comprising Mind of God what we call chance and random events is well composed into the symphony of creation.


いわゆるインテリジェントデザインイデオロギー支持者は、重大な神学上の誤りを犯している。彼ら神と自律運動しない物質という拮抗する二つの力が存在するというマニ教的誤りを復活させようとしている。この場合ではそれは偶然とインテリジェントデザインである。ここに対立などない。すべてを構成する"Mind of God"と呼ぶ、偶然とランダムイベントは創造のシンフォニーに位置づけられる。

これはJohn Templeton Foundationの意向もあるかもしれない。

Your front-page article "Darwinian Struggle: At Some Colleges, Classes Questioning Evolution Take Hold" (Nov. 14) presents the John Templeton Foundation as a concerted patron of the so-called intelligent design position. Quite the opposite is true. The JTF has provided tens of millions of dollars in support to research academics who are critical of the anti-evolution intelligent design position. The JTF has been, in fact, the chief sponsor of university courses, lectures and academic research that variously have argued against the intelligent design position.

WSJの一面記事「Darwinian Struggle: At Some Colleges, Classes Questioning Evolution Take Hold」はJohn Templeton Foundationをいわゆるインテリジェントデザインのポジションを支援するものだと報じている。これは事実に反する。John Templeton Foundationは数千万ドルの研究資金を、反進化論インテリジェントデザインなポジションに批判的な学術研究に提供している。John Templeton Foundationは事実、インテリジェントデザインなポジションに反対する多様な大学コース・講義・学術研究の主たる資金提供者である。

Good grief, I’m so tired of theologians telling us, Darwinism and theology are not incompatible, therefore quit fighting it. The assumption is, the only problems we have with Darwinism are theological. The problems I have are logical.

やれやれ、ダーウィニズムと神学は相容れないものではないので戦う必要はないと言ってくる神学者たちには飽き飽きだ。彼らは、ダーウィニズムが神学的であることだけが問題だと仮定している。しかし問題は論理的なものだ。

ポエムを語る数学者の論理が何かは知らんけどね。
