Update 2014/10/05

On Sunday, police and sheriff’s deputies located a missing homeless man who may have been exposed to the Ebola virus through contact with the first patient to be diagnosed with the virus in the U.S. The man, who hasn’t been named, had gone missing on Saturday.

U.S. Judge Clay Jenkins, Dallas County’s top official, said the homeless man was at low risk of contracting the disease, meaning he didn’t have close contact with Thomas Eric Duncan, who became ill after arriving in the U.S. and was sick for four days here before being hospitalized.

The man, who had shared an ambulance with Mr. Duncan, was put under monitoring again Sunday, according to county officials. He didn’t have a fever when he was checked on Saturday, according to authorities.

The vast majority of those being monitored aren’t under quarantine orders, meaning they are free to move about as long as they submit to health checkups daily for 21 days, the maximum incubation period for Ebola. Only four of the 48− Louise Troh, the woman Mr. Duncan was staying with, and three others at her apartment−are under quarantine after they failed to comply with a request to stay put.

Update(2014/10/01)

Journalists could be arrested and prosecuted if they fail to get written permission from the health ministry before contacting Ebola patients, conducting interviews or filming or photographing healthcare facilities, officials said.

"We have noted with great concern that photographs have been taken in treatment centres while patients are going in to be attended by doctors. That is invasion of the dignity, privacy and respect of patients," Tolbert Nyenswah, assistant minister of health and head of Liberia's Ebola Incident Management System, said.

"Ebola patients are no different from any other patients. We should do that (report) under permission so that we don't just take pictures or send out stories of naked people (in a way) that does not respect their privacy," he said.

A patient at Howard University Hospital had been “ruled out” as an Ebola case, officials there said Saturday, while a patient at George Washington University Hospital was determined to have the flu.

A third patient, who was evaluated at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville, Md., had malaria, and not Ebola, the hospital said Friday.
Howard hospital spokeswoman Kerry-Ann Hamilton did not specify what other disease her hospital’s patient had.

A passenger who was taken off a flight from Brussels to Newark, N.J., today along with his daughter after his sickness triggered fear that he might have Ebola does not have the deadly disease, officials said.

United Airlines Flight 998 was met by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials at Newark Liberty International Airport and the passenger, who was believed to be from Liberia, and his daughter were removed from the plane by a CDC crew in full hazmat gear. They were taken to University Hospital in Newark for testing.

"After an examination by physicians at University Hospital, the symptoms of one individual were found to be consistent with another, minor treatable condition unrelated to Ebola," University Hospital spokeswoman Donna Leusner said. "The second individual, who was traveling with the patient, was asymptomatic. The two individuals will be released with self-monitoring."

Other passengers remained on the plane while the sick passenger and his daughter were being removed.

After they were off the plane and it was determined he was not contagious, the rest of the passengers were allowed off, a source with knowledge of the situation told ABC News.

The passengers were required to give information on how to follow up with them if the need arose.

Five students at four different schools came into contact with the man, Dallas Superintendent Mike Miles added, but none has exhibited symptoms of the deadly virus. The children are being monitored at home, and the schools they attended remain open, Miles said. Between 12 and 18 people have been identified as having come in contact with the patient, who is the first to be diagnosed with Ebola in the United States, officials said.

    Mike Miles

A Texas hospital patient has tested positive for Ebola, making the patient the first case diagnosed in the United States. The test was conducted at the state public health laboratory in Austin. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the positive result.

The patient is an adult with a recent history of travel to West Africa. The patient developed symptoms days after returning to Texas from West Africa and was admitted into isolation on Sunday at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas.

"An individual traveling from Liberia has been diagnosed with Ebola in the United States," Thomas Frieden, director of the CDC, said in a conference call Tuesday afternoon.

This person who is infected left Liberia on Sept. 19 and arrived in the U.S. the following day with no symptoms. They began showing symptoms four days after arriving in the U.S.
"The bottom line here is that I have no doubt that we will control this importation, or this case of Ebola, so that it does not spread widely in this country," he said. "It is certainly possible that someone who had contact with this individual could develop Ebola in the coming weeks. But there is no doubt in my mind that we will stop it here."
