地球平板説な地図(1893)

創造論とは別に、聖書を字義通り解釈する「地球平板説」がある。これは19世紀に生まれ、20世紀終わりころまで残っていたもの。

旧約聖書は地球が丸いことが知られる前の記述が大半であり、その記述が地球平板である。聖書の記述をさがせば、地球平板な記述は見つかる。それを地図下部に書いているのだが、引用元がちょっと間違ってたりする。

なお、日本語訳は新共同訳を使ったので、あまり地球平板に読めないかもしれない。

Talk to a prominent social conservative these day and the odds are pretty good that he or she is a fan of David Barton. Perhaps more than any other person, the Texas-based amateur historian has provided grist for the idea of American Exceptionalism−the argument that America's unique success in the world is divinely caused and due to its committment to core Judeo-Christian principles. Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, the tea party champion and likely 2012 presidential contender, invited him to teach members of Congress about the Constitution; former House Speaker Newt Gingrich says he learns something new every time he listens to Barton.

He's a pretty influential guy. So what, exactly, does he teach? On Wednesday, Right Wing Watch flagged a recent interview Barton gave with an evangelcial talk show, in which he argues that the Founding Fathers had explicitly rejected Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. Yes, that Darwin. The one whose seminal work, On the Origin of Species, wasn't even published until 1859. Barton declared, "As far as the Founding Fathers were concerned, they'd already had the entire debate over creation and evolution, and you get Thomas Paine, who is the least religious Founding Father, saying you've got to teach Creation science in the classroom. Scientific method demands that!" Paine died in 1809, the same year Darwin was born. Here is a clip

若い地球の創造論業界内の揉め事

Lexington Herald-Leaderの2011年3月24日付の報道によれば、若い地球の創造論ミニストリAnswers in Genesisを主宰しているKen Hamが、これまで招待されていたGreat Hoome School Conventionsに呼ばれなくなった[via Panda's Thumb]。このGreat Hoome School Conventionsはホームスクールしている"若い地球の創造論"を信じる人々の集まりらしい。

Answers in Genesisによれば、以下のような通告を受けたという。

The Board believes that Ken's public criticism of the convention itself and other speakers at our convention require him to surrender the spiritual privilege of addressing our homeschool audience. Please know that our Board is 100% young earth and we largely share AIG's perspective from a scientific standpoint. That is why Ken was originally invited and treated so graciously and extremely generously in Memphis and Greenville (far beyond what we do for other speakers or their ministries). Our expression of sacrifice and extraordinary kindness towards Ken and AIG has been returned to us and our attendees with Ken publicly attacking our conventions and other speakers. Our Board believes Ken's comments to be unnecessary, ungodly, and mean-spirited statements that are divisive at best and defamatory at worst.

まあ、実際のところは、創造論出版業界団体内のささやかな揉め事。業界第1位のAnswers in Genesisとそれ以外の仲は悪くても不思議ではない。

現生人類と類人猿の間には越えられない壁があるが...

Mark Isaakの"Index to Creationist Claims"(創造論者の主張)には「すべてのホミニドの化石は、完全に人類であるか、完全に類人猿である」というのがある。

実際に、類人猿と現生人類の間に越えられない明確な壁があるなら、ホミニドの化石は明確にどちらかに分類できるはずだ。しかし、創造論者たちはそうできていないと、Jim Foleyは指摘する。

It could be pointed out that evolutionists also disagree on how fossils should be classified, which species they belong to, etc. True enough. But according to evolutionary thinking, these fossils come from a number of closely related species intermediate between apes and humans. If this is so, we would expect to find that some of them are hard to classify, and we do.

Creationists, on the other hand, assert that apes and humans are separated by a wide gap. If this is true, deciding on which side of that gap individual fossils lie should be trivially easy. Clearly, that is not the case.
